Joe Girard
The Ultimate Car Salesman
Rags to Riches
Joe Girard grew up a very poor Sicilian boy in America in 1928. As a child he worked as a shoeshine boy and then a newsboy for the Detroit Free Press at age 9. We worked many other odd jobs until at 35, he was a cars salesman. On his first day, he already had sold a car. One of his other salesmen insisted that he was too good and had him fired. Girard then went to Merollis Chevrolet in Eastpointe, Michigan. He held this job until 1977 and set many sales records over the 12 years. Girard sold over 13,000 between 1963 and 1978. One of his famous quotes was "If the elevator to success is out of order, you'll have to use the stairs one step at a time".
