Weekly Message from Mr. Hanzeli
Hello Elger Bay Families,
This was our first blustery week that include wind, rain, and the color changing leaves making their way to the ground. Sure signs that we are headed for less light during the day. We will fall back one hour on Sunday, November 7, but until then we are already experiencing darker mornings. Please be sure to emphasize safety for your children at the bus stop and in the neighborhood as they get ready for school in the morning. Less visibility for motorists and the sometimes impulsive actions of our kids can be a dangerous combo. Thanks for keeping this safety note in mind.
Schedules should be close to confirmed for each of you as conference days are this coming week, Wednesday - Friday. School will run from 9:00-12:00 all three days, even Wednesday, which is normally late start will begin at 9:00. AM bus pickup times will be on the MTRF schedule.
For those students needing picture retakes, that will happen on the Thursday of this week (reminder it is one of the half days).
And a final reminder that our PTA will be hosting a DRIVE THROUGH Trunk or Treat this Friday, 6:00-7:30. Check out the flyer below.

What: Parent / Teacher Conference (approximately 20 minutes)
When: October 27, 28, or 29 (half day school / half day conferences)

One of the (above) parent conference days is a Wednesday. On that Wednesday it is a unique schedule so please mark your personal calendars.

Grade 4 and 5 Assessment Window (UPDATED)
Reminder that students in grades 4 and 5 will be taking an abbreviated version of the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) on Tuesday and Thursday of (last) week. Each of those days it should take your child about an hour each day (+/- 30 minutes) to complete one test on English / Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. These test will contain items from the end of their previous grade and will help serve as a piece of our data about how each student is doing academically at this point. If your child missed the assessment days last week, they will have the opportunity to take the assessment if they are scheduled to return before the assessment window closes.
NOTE: These students and grade 3 will take their on grade, end of year SBA late in the Spring (late April / May)

Counselor's Corner (Repeat)
Hello, EBE parents and families!
My name is Allie Nosker and I am the school counselor at Elger Bay Elementary. This is my first year at EBE and I have the privilege of being here with your students 5 days a week. This is very exciting because it is also the first year that EBE has had a full-time school counselor. My top priorities include fostering a safe environment for all children and creating mental health awareness.
I serve student’s by creating interventions related to their social-emotional development, academic growth, and college and career readiness. My main goal for this year is to get to know all of you and your students so that I can serve you and the Camano Island community best.
In every EBE Family Connections Newsletter you will find the Counseling Corner where I will provide different resources for parents and information related to our Character Strong curriculum. This curriculum weaves social-emotional learning and character education into the daily fabric of everything we do as educators! Throughout the year we will introduce 10 different character traits.
For the month of October we are learning about Empathy. The links below are Family Letters that give ideas of how you can continue the conversation about Empathy at home. You can also find my contact information below. I encourage you to reach out to me with any questions or concerns because the best way I can serve students is by partnering alongside you.

Superintendent Deborah Rumbaugh’s Friday Message, 10.22.21 (Repeat)
Hello Families,
I wanted to share an experience I had at Stanwood Middle School this week. I watched a pair of students present a mini-lesson to their science class on “Why is Light So Important?” The two students made connections between light and darkness, light and plant life, light and overall health. I was so impressed! As I listened, I began to make connections between light and learning. As we work together to improve our teaching practices, provide engaging learning experiences and give meaningful feedback to students and families, we bring the excitement of learning and growth into the lives of our students. This excitement is often seen as a “light” going off in the mind of a student. As concepts are grasped and new learning takes root, students grow and flourish. I am grateful for the time I spent at SMS learning about light and its importance!
Virtual Coffee with the Board
The School Board will be holding Virtual Coffee with the Board events on November 8 and 9, 2021, with morning, mid-day and evening sessions available. This is an opportunity for families and the community to interact with and meet your School Board of Directors, receive district updates, and have an opportunity to ask questions.
Employment opportunities with SCSD
SCSD is hiring! We love to have family members as SCSD employees. Please visit our Employment Opportunities page and apply online. We have immediate openings for bus drivers, custodians, electricians, food service workers and paraeducators.
Fall conferences reminder
A reminder to families that October 27, 28 and 29 are early release days for parent-teacher conferences. The schedule for those days will be 7:40 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. for secondary schools and 9:00 a.m. to noon for elementary schools. Please note that the 27th is a Wednesday, but is not a late start day. Please contact your student’s school if you have questions about scheduling conferences. You will have the option to attend in person or virtually via Google Meets.
Strategic Plan
Help plan our future in the SCSD as we begin the work to create our five-year strategic plan. We will be scheduling a series of virtual community forums to share your ideas for our district. Look for more detailed information soon.
Replacement Capital Projects and Technology Levy
On the February 2022 ballot, we will be running a 4-year Replacement Capital Projects and Technology Levy that would replace an expiring 4-year capital levy. This levy proposal would allow the district to maintain technology systems and continue to make major improvements to existing facilities.
The estimated tax rate per $1,000 of assessed property value for this measure is 27 cents for each year of the levy. There is no increase in the tax rate in this levy from the previous levy. When assessed property values change, the local school tax rate is adjusted to ensure that the district collects only the levy dollar amount approved by voters. If approved by voters, this measure would expire in 2026.

If Needed, Covid-19 Tests Available (Repeat)
Hello,
Covid-19 testing is available, if needed, to EBE students. This is for the convenience of our families so you don't have to make a separate appointment with your health provider. To access this, please just call the EBE office and ask for the nurse's office and we can schedule you an appointment.
We can also do a test for older students that attend Stanwood-Camano schools, but for whom it would be more convenient to test here at EBE.
Let us know how we can help.
Thank you,
Donna Hunter RN
