Newtown NEWS
Newtown Elementary School
Hello Newtown Families,
I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the unusually warm weather. Our students continue to do a wonderful job being flexible, doing their best, and taking care of one another through each learning model. It is so impressive to see how they adapt and transition when faced with challenges. Next week is our transition between marking periods. Have a wonderful weekend, enjoy what is sure to be some great weather, and we'll see everyone next week!

1st MP Report Card Information (Grades 3-6)
Dear Parents of Grades 3-6 Children,
I send this message to inform you that we will be making a modification to our first marking period report cards. Specifically, we are narrowing down our assessment fields to two specific categories: Characteristics of a Successful Learner and Support Services Received. This change will impact the first marking period only. Marking periods 2 through 4 will reflect our traditional array of report card assessment categories.
One of our lessons learned from the first marking period is that it took much longer than expected to teach our young students how to take digital assessments. Rather than race through the process of acclimating learners to the new test-taking technology, our teachers dedicated the necessary class time to the process. Time spent on this task now impacts our ability to accurately assess student learning as thoroughly and successfully as we will be able to do in the second marking period and other marking periods to follow.
We believe that focusing our first report card on the Characteristics of a Successful Learner and Support Services Received is the fair and right thing to do for grades 3-6. Please know that teachers will use the upcoming parent-teacher conferences to discuss student progress and share information about the assessments that have been completed.
Please feel free to contact me with specific questions or concerns related to this communication. Specific conference times and information should be organized through your child's teacher.
Thank you,
Robert Francis
Principal
Demographic Update for Families on HAC
Don't forget to complete the demographic update on the Home Access Center. It's quick and easy, and it's necessary in case there is an urgent need to contact a parent. Here's what to do:
- Log into HAC (you will land on the registration tab).
- Click the “New” button which will invoke the form.
- Review the demographic form and make any necessary changes.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “I agree” box.
- Click “Submit”.
Safety Drills
Within the first 60 days of school, we must conduct emergency drills within our building. These drills help us practice what we should do in the event of an emergency. Fire Drills are practiced monthly throughout the school year.
We will also practice our A.L.I.C.E. and Shelter-In-Place drills. We just wanted to make you aware that teachers will be reviewing these procedures with students within the next two weeks.
