Dragon Tales Newsletter

My name is Anne Stacy, and I am the media specials teacher. I started last year with your students in media class. In media class, we have been focused on learning routines and expectations, since it’s the beginning of the year. Many students needed practice remembering how to log into the computers at school. First through fifth grade students have been working on their keyboarding skills, while kindergarten has been working on logging into the computers and improving their mouse skills.

We have also been reading books online using myON Reader. The website to log into for myON has changed, but it has been updated on the Derby Ridge website, so students can still access myON at home and read ebooks on a computer, tablet, or phone through Derby’s website. This tool will read books out loud to students, so it is very helpful while students are learning to read!

The music room has moved into the building! It has been a joy to share the excitement of our students as they walked into the new room at the start of this school year. Many students commented about how “roomy” and open it is, and how colorful and bright the room appears. They have been thrilled about the change.

The room is already filled with learning, singing, playing, and having fun. Our youngest kindergarten friends are learning what it looks like and sounds like to be a musician in the music room, while all other grades are spending time reviewing rhythms, concepts, and terms by using instruments, games, puppets, and songs. We have had a great start to our year, and I am looking forward to seeing them continue to grow as musicians.

If you have a fourth or fifth grade student, please watch for a letter about our after-school choir later this fall!

Welcome back to all our Dragon artists and families! I am looking forward to a great year of exploration and creation. This year we have created some new spaces in our studio; the Creation Station is up and running. This is a mini makerspace right in our Art Room where students can create and explore using a wide range of materials and techniques. Students are excited about our upcoming projects and building our artist family and community. Our Dragon Artists have been working hard to help each other be the best they can be while creating amazing works of art. I am also excited to announce that this year we will have a few new additions to the school to help display our Dragons’ work. Finally, Art Club permission slips will and it looks like we will be meeting on Tuesdays this year. Mark your calendars and keep an eye out for the halls to start filling with color!
