One of the interesting phenomenon is that many Chinese immigrants keep strong feeling towards their motherland like all immigrants from all over the world. The Chinese media in the Chinese communities around the country enjoy an extended readership in America. At the same time, new immigrants need to emerge into the mainstream. Local media provide mainstream news to the Chinese community. Chinese immigrants are also exposed to the news of mainstream social life. In this lesson, we will introduce a news about Hilton Paris from a local Chinese newspaper in New York. You will have a chance to read the news in Chinese from a local newspaper.
In the Chinese communities, there are several newspapers in Chinese that possess a great numbers of readership. The largest Chinese newspaper is called World Journal (世界日报). The newspaper has over 8 editions for different locations: New York, New England, Florida, Washington DC, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston. It serves readers from all parts of Chinese speaking areas, such as mainland China, Taiwan, Hongkong. The newspaper keeps using traditional characters.
The purpose of this lesson is to expose learners to news in Chinese related to an actress. Although it is not about Chinese or Chinese culture, we may be able to compare this kind of topics in the two cultures. Exposure to foreign media is also a good way to learn a foreign language.
Stars and celebrities are popular topics in the media. People like to read about movie stars, sport stars, political figures, and wealthy people. They attract the readership. Therefore, they bring money to the media. This is universal. It is true in both China and the United-States.
The Impact of New Medias
With the fast development of the media, especially the Internet, Chinese have various channels to access information and news even though in general, some information or channels are still blocked. There exist underground publications too. Most of people would agree that if there is no obvious intention to overthrow or challenge the leadership of the current government, any publications would be published.
The censorship is strictly targeted at those organizations that challenge Communist Party or intend to cause social chaos. Chinese government is trying to filter the Internet, but still people can find that the government tolerates some degree of criticism. The openness is not comparable to what it was 20 years ago.
Satellite TVs and radio broadcasting also bring information and news to China. It becomes harder and harder to block news from outside world. At the same time, Chinese are also trying to broadcast/send information and news to outside world using various channels.
One successful use of media was during the Sichuan Earthquakes. Chinese media sent out the information about the earthquake immediately to abroad, so that rescue efforts could be brought in in a shortest time. All major hotels and foreign establishments have access to CNN and major news media. The world is becoming smaller in many ways.
The impact of media will change China as well as the whole world. The world is becoming smaller in many ways. The impact of media will change China as well as the whole world.
