Principal’s Message

Charter Oak International Academy

A message from Principal Melian

Dear Charter Oak Families,

As Opening Day approaches, I cannot tell you how excited we are in welcoming all our students back and meeting the new families who join our school community for the first time.

Here is some important information as we get the year started:

Meet & Greet

All students are welcome to join our Meet & Greet event to say hello to their new teachers on Tuesday August 31st. For those who are in pre-kindergarten to grade 2 please stop by anytime between 2:00 and 2:30. If your child is in grades 3 to 5, stop by between 2:30 and 3:00

The event will be held outside by the Flagpole.

Families Returning from RLE

For families returning from the Remote School please feel free to join me in the teaching garden, outside the school cafeteria. We will start by 3:00.

First Day Opening Ceremony

This year we will have a brief First Day Opening Ceremony on Wednesday, September 1st. The Ceremony will take place by the Flagpole and will include students from kindergarten to grade 5. Students and families are welcome to gather in that area by 8:35. Please look for signs with Teachers’ names to help you locate your child’s class. Additional Staff will be present with grade level lists to assist you. Pre-kindergarteners should go directly to their entrances on Oakwood Avenue where their teachers will welcome them. Families are reminded to wear masks for this event.

Drop Off & Pick Up

Doors will open to students at 8:20. Kindergarten students will enter through the FRC entrance on Oakwood Avenue. Kindergarten families can use the pre-kindergarten parking lot until 8:30.

1st. grade students will use the Oakwood entrance; 2nd. - 5th. grade students will use the main entrance.

For dismissal at 2:00 on all Wednesdays, including the First Day of School

Pre-k, kindergarten, and 1st. grade will use the same door as for arrival. Pre-k students will be dismissed at 1:50, followed by Kindergarten and Grade 1 at 2:00.

Grades 2 and 3 will use the cafeteria door and grades 4 and 5 will use the flagpole door.

For dismissal at 3:20 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays

Pre-k, kindergarten, and 1st. grade will use the same door as for arrival. Pre-k students will be dismissed at 3:10, followed by Kindergarten and Grade 1 at 3:20.

Grades 2 and 3 will use the cafeteria door and grades 4 and 5 will use the flagpole door.

Families are reminded to continue to wear masks at drop off and pick up.

Many of you will be dropping your children in the main entrance. Please follow the path marked by cones. In order to maintain appropriate and safe flow of traffic make sure your child is ready to exit the car. Staff will welcome and assist you every morning.

Pre-kindergarten times are a bit different: arrival is at 8:35 and dismissal at 3:10. Please refer to specific communication from our department supervisor and teachers regarding specific doors and procedures.

Students who ride the bus will be greeted at the bus each morning by staff and directed to their entrances.

All families are welcome to use available parking spaces in the main parking lot at any time. The pre-kindergarten parking lot should only be used by pre-kindergarten families with the exception of kindergarten families during drop-off and pick up times, referred to above. You are also encouraged to use parking spaces available on surrounding streets (Flatbush, Oakwood, and Sidney) which provide easy access to all the entrances to the building.

Breakfast and Lunch

Breakfast and lunch will continue to be provided for free this year. Breakfast is available to students as they enter the building, using a Grab & Go system.

Curriculum Night

Please stay tuned for more information regarding Curriculum Night which will be held in the second week of school. This year, parents will be able to attend Curriculum Night in the building, wearing masks and following standard protocols. More information to come.

Visitors & Volunteers

Visitors are allowed and welcome to join in our learning community in-person this year. We will follow safety protocols such as wearing masks, washing hands, and maintaining social distancing for all students and adults. Please be aware that visitors are not permitted at lunch or recess times, and we will continue to use the necessary identity verification process. Please remember to bring your ID when visiting. Volunteers will be required to be fully vaccinated before being allowed to help in a school.

Mitigation Strategies

As you know, the use of masks will continue to be required and we will maintain all basic mitigation measures such as social distancing, ventilation, hand washing, frequent use of outdoor areas, cleaning and disinfection, etc.

This year we will also be able to have students eat lunch in the cafeteria (when not outside) having one grade level at a time instead of the two grade levels in pre-pandemic years.

Students will be able to enjoy recess together with friends from other classes in their grade, following basic mitigation strategies specific to the setting.

From Our Nurses

For parents of students in Preschool, Kindergarten, and new to Charter Oak: please submit a copy of your child's most recent Connecticut health form and vaccination record to the school prior to their first day.
