Counselor's Corner

January is a month of new resolutions and new beginnings. New or ongoing resolutions are set such as losing weight, changing a habit, finding a new job, being more health conscious, being a better parent and so on. That is a major goal and by setting and focusing on smaller/daily goals we are more likely to be successful. Giving ourselves choices, attainable daily goals, committing to ourselves, and allowing ourselves to fail with grace will keep us on the right path. When we accomplish our goal, yeah! We celebrate (even if it’s a daily thing)! When we fail to comply with our own daily commitment, oops, let's offer ourselves some grace and empathy. We encourage ourselves by looking back, reflecting and noticing what we accomplished daily, and by setting a new commitment and a plan on what to do if we find ourselves moving away from our daily goal. Once we make our daily commitment, be assertive and give yourself choices. Example of being assertive “Today I will exercise”. Example of choices: “I can either do weight training or go running. Which will work for me today?” Whatever your goal is for this year, I wish you well and will celebrate your accomplishments, small and big.

You can visit my website to find resources on how you can create commitments, and more: https://sites.google.com/kleinisd.net/counselorbenfer/home
