The Tiger Times
The Monthly Franklin Family Newsletter - March 2021
Whew, February was a jam-packed and amazing month at Franklin - so much celebration, so much learning, and so many great events and experiences for the Franklin Tigers.
Did you know that our 3rd-5th grade students got to meet the famous and talented author of the Hilo graphic novel series, Judd Winick? He gave students many inspiring life lessons about creativity, goals, and practice.
And thank you to all who joined our Lunar New Year and Black History Month evening events for students. Franklin's diversity is one of our greatest assets as a community, and it made us so proud to see students learning about cultures similar to and different from their own.
March promises to be another busy month. Our Virtual Scholastic Book Fair will be continuing all of this week, and we hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to order books and activities for your children from the Scholastic site - Franklin will earn back 25% of the funds that are spent, which will help us to buy more books and activities for our school in the future. Thank you for supporting your children's reading and our school at the same time!
And we'll see you next week for the March Materials Distribution event! As usual, we will be passing out classroom materials, as well as some snacks.
It's hard to believe that it's been just about a year since our last day of in-person school. The whole staff misses being together with all the students so much, and we miss seeing your children's faces smiling in their classrooms. But we also continue to be so incredibly amazed and moved by what the Franklin teachers, students, and families have accomplished every day of the last year - through very challenging and complicated times. We have proven that nothing is impossible!
As always, please feel free to reach out to us at Franklin@ousd.org with ANY questions, concerns, or suggestions.
With love and gratitude,
Ms. Lai & Ms. Sufrin
See you this Wednesday, March 10th, for This Month's Materials and Snacks Distribution!
Please remember to come wearing a mask and keep a safe distance from all those around you.
We look forward to seeing you then!

Spotlight on Franklin Teachers!
Mr. Grosse
Hello Franklin! I have been honored to teach in this remarkable school community, Franklin, for the past nine years. I have taught 4th and 5th grades throughout my 28 years of teaching in Oakland. I enjoy witnessing the growth that occurs as students develop their skills and talents to reach their goals. The rewards of teaching Oakland's diverse and creative students fuel my passion for teaching and remind me that the world is full of hope. I graduated from UC Santa Cruz and received my teaching credential from Hayward State long, long ago. Before teaching, I worked many jobs and saved in order to travel and explored over 20 different countries. When I am not teaching our amazing students, I enjoy the outdoors and cooking healthy foods. The creative outlet that brings me joy is playing basketball with my friends (someday soon!). Thanks to all the students and families for the opportunity to serve you and all the kindness you display!
Ms. Simons
Mr. Trujillo
I was born in San Francisco. I am a fourth generation San Franciscan on my Mother’s side. Her family came to San Francisco in 1849. That’s right, they were 49ers.
My Father comes from a family of farmers and sheep herders from Colorado.
I have been a teacher at Franklin School since January of 1988. I like working with kids. They are fun to be around and so much of the world is new to them.
My father once told me, “Your students will spend more time with you than anyone else during the day. Make sure they have a good, happy place to learn.” I always keep that in mind and try to let my students enjoy these precious days of childhood.
