Perry Creek Elementary and Clark Early Childhood Center
Dear Families of Students at Clark Early Childhood Center and Perry Creek Elementary,
We greatly value your partnerships and the feedback you provide to us. In recent years, many of you have shared your desire to experience a more unified Perry Creek Elementary School and Clark Early Childhood Center experience. I have heard your concerns about having to help students transition schools after kindergarten, manage staggered pick up/drop off times, or facilitate attendance at school events or conferences for multiple elementary age children. Many of you have brought up the idea of having Perry Creek serve all students in grades TK – 5th. I appreciate your comments and suggestions, and I believe now is the right time to move forward with this idea.
When Perry Creek was originally built, projections estimated larger class sizes than we are currently experiencing. With those projections, the Board of Education at that time determined the need to retain Clark Early Childhood Center for TK and kindergarten. As we look ahead to next year’s class projections, it is clear we can now bring our TK and kindergarten students into the Perry Creek building while still maintaining an acceptable overall building enrollment size.
With the Board’s support, starting in the 2020-2021 school year, plans are now in place for Perry Creek Elementary School to begin serving all students in TK – 5th grade.
Clark Early Childhood Center will still exist to serve preschool students and fulfill additional education needs in the District.
Your support in this transition is greatly appreciated. Together, let’s celebrate the unified experience we now have the opportunity to provide to our students. If you have any questions regarding this topic, please feel free to contact me on Let’s Talk or call me at 712-279-6836.

Focus on IB Learner Profile - Thinker
We have focused on the IB learner profile attributes of caring, inquirer, risk-taker, principled, balanced and communicators. This month, we are focusing on being Thinkers.
Students who are THINKERS work to solve problems independently. They can imagine many solutions to a question or challenge. Thinkers make good decisions and can predict the outcomes of their actions. They think creatively and critically.
How can parents develop students who are thinkers at home?
- Encourage your child to try to think of solutions to problems independently.
- Pose different real-life problems and questions to your child:
- “I’m not sure how to arrange the glasses so they can all fit in the cupboard.”
- “I wonder how much the groceries in the cart with cost…how can we make an estimate?”
- “We need enough cookies for the 20 people in your class. What kind of change should we make to our recipe?”
- Ask your children questions when they are working on a problem:
- “Do you have any ideas about how we might begin?”
- “How can we do this differently?”
- “I had never thought of that. Tell me more about it.”
- “What other ways can we show that?”
- “Why do you thing that?”
- “How did you figure that out?”

2020 Census - Every Person Counts
Census Day is observed on April 1, 2020. Households begin receiving invitations to participate in the Census in mid-March. There are three ways to complete the census – online, by phone, or by mail – and the Census Bureau provides forms in 14 languages. It’s important that every household participate and that every person is counted.
What is the Census? Get the Facts.

Census Data And The Impact on Public Schools
Public schools in Iowa will be directly impacted by the 2020 census. The 2010 census estimated there were 731,975 children in Iowa ages 0-18. Children ages 0-4 are typically undercounted, and Iowa estimates 4,726 children were not included in the census.
Iowa receives over $8 billion annually from the federal government based on population estimates from the 2010 census, including funds for Special Education Grants, the National School Breakfast & Lunch Programs, Head Start, and many other education programs vital to the success of Iowa’s children. Those 4,726 children who weren’t counted in 2010 are now in grades 6-9, and the state has lost out on millions of dollars in federal funding each year for those children’s education.
We cannot let the census become another barrier to the funding of our student’s educations. The Sioux City Community School District is asking for the help and support of all families in our district to ensure that every child is counted.
Help us make sure the students of our district receive the funding they deserve. Help us make sure all kids are counted!
