And we're off!

A journey of 1000 miles starts with a single step (Chinese proverb).

The run-up to the first day of school always seems like a race. On the family side, there are supplies to buy, forms to fill out, lunches to pack, and so much more. On the school side, there are rooms to prepare, supplies to inventory, class lists to double-check, and so much more.

That's why the first day of school is actually ... a joyful relief!

It's like preparing for a road trip. You prepare thoroughly, and once you get into the car, you just enjoy the drive. That's what we are doing at Lakeview right now - enjoying time with your students in our "car" - getting to know them, build relationships, and set expectations for the journey together. We have taken our first steps into the school year, but there are miles and miles ahead to enjoy!

First PTO meeting of the year!

Every family at Lakeview is a member of the PTO. Our PTO generously leads and supports many efforts to ensure the great climate of our Lakeview community and high academic expectations for our students. Our PTO needs your help! Our first meeting of the 2019-2020 school year will be on Thursday, September 12 from 7-8 p.m. in the Lakeview library. Enter through the front doors.

Building a Reading Life

At the beginning of the school year, many classes talk about "building a reading life" and the habits and routines that support reading. As a parent, the answer to so many of our hopes and dreams for our children are grounded in (1) good life habits and (2) reading. Students need to read outside of school every day in order to grow as learners. What routines at home include reading? Make it fun by letting children choose the book or re-read a favorite book. Visit the library and get the next book in a beloved series. Help your child get lost in their books this year!

School Attendance

Thank you for setting up positive attendance routines at home to start the school year. Being on time (arriving before 8:30 a.m.) and being in school every possible day this year is important to your child's learning. This letter was mailed to all South Milwaukee elementary families that were enrolled by August 23rd. Elementary principals are trying to be proactive about attendance this year, and part of that means helping families understand the law and district policy. Please be sure you have read the letter and call us if you have any questions.

End of day pick-up

School ends at 3:35 p.m. and all students need to be picked up at that time. Here are some things you should not expect the Lakeview office to do:

• Do not call the office to inform us that you will be late to pick up your child. It is the family's responsibility to be on time at 3:35 p.m. every school day.

• Do not call the office at the end of the school day and expect someone to be able to answer your call. The end of the school day is very busy in a school office. You should communicate your plans directly to your child in the morning for afternoon pickup and send a note to the teacher if there is anything other than the normal pickup routine for your child.

Specials Schedule

Are you wondering what specials your child has each day now that we are using our new 4-day rotation for art, music, PE, and library? Here are two documents that will help you.

Monthly calendar listing the day number - use this to find out if today is a Day 1, 2, 3, or 4.

Specials rotation by classroom - use this to identify which special(s) a class has on each day of the rotation. (3rd grade students in Ms. Manthe's class received a letter on Wednesday identifying students that were in each group for specials.)

Introducing STOPit for grades 3-5

In the last two days, our 3rd-5th grade students learned about another way that the School District of South Milwaukee is providing to keep students safe through anonymous reporting. Here are links for your information:
