Detail
Because the US is so far away from Europe many times when wars come up the US has no reason to get involved. It does not have the same land disputes that Europe has and the history of war. Americans did not want to go to war and did not want to be dragged into a war from political ties. In addition Washington said in his fair we'll address that the US should stay out if problems in Europe.
Characteristics: Interesting facts
- Isolationism was the dominate idea for longer than just the 20's. Most of the information about it I found was on the time after WW1.
-The roots of Isolationism go all the way back to colonial times. A lot of the people came to the new world to escape war and conflict. In addition because of the vast distance and difficulty to get to the new world people in the new world felt removed and not a part of Europe. I'd even go out on a limb and say many of the causes of the revolutionary war also lead to isolationism.
Significance:
-Isolationism had a large effect on the US staying out of WW1 and WW2 for as long as they did. Though we did fight in both, had we joined in sooner the war and the world might be much different. In addition, us not getting involved was part of the reason the Jews could be slaughtered as they where. This is not the first, only or last time this kind of moral problem has come up. Do we protect our own interests or defend people in need at a cost of our own?
