  • North Vietnam fought with its allies against South Vietnam and its allies
  • Lyndon B. Johnson (the president of the U.S. at the time) was asked many times to send troops to fight along with South Vietnam
  • the North was communist, and the South were anticommunist
  • These groups were fighting over division of their territory and against their government controls
  • the fighting took place all over North and South Vietnam
  • some battles took place near the Mekong Delta, South China Sea, and the Gulf of Sicm
  • The Vietnam War started in 1954 and ended in 1975 (over 20 years)
  • During the war, there was also a Cold War going on
  • French Rule ended during the process of trying to divide Vietnam
  • U.S. leaders believed that if Vietnam became a communist country, it would lead to the "fall" of neighboring states to the communists
