Advanced Reading Update

Patterns of Change

After many months, we recently finished out Patterns of Change unit. This unit was so much fun for me to teach your students. We ended the unit reading a Shakespeare sonnet and it is amazing to me what your 4th grade students can interpret from advanced literature. Please look for a pack of work to come home next week. Also, many students completed their essays on google drive. You can access this account from home with their school email address and password.

Ending with Enigmas

For our final push we will be reading nonfiction about enigmas of the world such as Stonehenge, the Bermuda Triangle, and The Lost Colony of Roanoke Island. Students will read different theories about each enigma and complete a notebook of their thoughts and beliefs. If time, they will then pick one enigma to learn about more in depth and about which to complete some independent projects. The students have been WAITING to do this unit and I think the high interest will serve us well as the end of the year wiggles are here.

There is nothing I love more than reading with children and I enjoyed every minute of these reading groups. I believe they are all better writers about their reading and willing to read things that seem difficult at first. Thank you for supporting your children as readers.

Below please find a link to books called "Summertime Favorites" by the National Endowment for the Humanities. You can search by grade span. Your students can definitely read the grade 7-8 range if you feel the content is appropriate for your reader. Have a great summer and HAPPY READING!!
