Provider Insider, Fall 2022
October, November & December 2022
Happy Fall Ya'all!
As we move into the crisp Fall mornings it seems like a perfect time to plan for cozy reading corners. We have a lending library at CCR&R that includes “big books”, the type of book that allows a large group of children to see the pictures while you read. Please see the section in this newsletter to learn more about our lending library.
Did you have a chance to attend the Oregon Child Care Start-Up & Expansion Grant statewide webinar? This is an exciting opportunity to start a new child care facility, family child care or expand your licensed capacity. If you did not attend the webinar or you still have questions, please call us at CCR&R. We’d be happy to offer technical assistance filling out the grant application and help clarify how the grant is intended to be used.
Congratulations to the new Preschool Promise grantees!! Clackamas county expanded their Preschool Promise reach by four sites and 104 slots. It’s exciting to see Oregon make a bigger investment in early childhood learning and recognize that high quality child care happens in homes, centers and schools. We are looking forward to continuing our partnership and support in Preschool Promise sites.
As a last note, I encourage you to slowly breathe in the change in the air, looks for changes in nature and embrace change in your programs as we settle in for a new season. Take care.
Sandy Meados, Program Coordinator

Focus on the Pyramid Model
We are pleased to add quarterly information about the Pyramid model to our newsletter. This comes from Jennifer Stepken, Early Intervention Supervisor and The National Center for Pyramid Model Innovations (NCPMI).
Why Pyramid Model (PBIS)?
"Children need positive relationships, and for over 15 years, The Pyramid Model has worked to support social and emotional development in early childhood classrooms. Through evidence-based research, innovative techniques, and global reach, we empower children, birth to 5 years, to succeed in school and life."
- The Pyramid Model Consortium: Supporting Early Childhood PBIS
Pyramid Quick Tips
Strategy: Create routines for the children in your classroom or home childcare setting. Creating routines will help the children understand, learn, and expect what comes next.
What is a routine?
Routines are events like snack time and naptime, which happen on a regular basis. And typically, a series of steps are involved.
One example is snack time. At snack time, children may be expected to wash their hands, select a seat at the table, and then wait for their snack.
How do I teach routines?
- Model the routine for your students. (Show them the steps)
- Talk about what you are doing now and what comes next. For example, we are having circle time now and next we will have a snack.
- Post a visual schedule. Some children benefit from a visual schedule.
Result: When children learn what to expect in the routine, they will be able to participate more easily in the classroom routines. This can lessen transition time between activities and help the day to run more smoothly.
To learn more about how routines support children in the classroom, click on this "What Works" handout to learn more about the strategy

ELD is offering many webinars for as a part of NCPMI's Pyramid Model Webinar Series. These are recorded for viewing on your own schedule. Visit https://challengingbehavior.org/training/webinars/upcoming-webinars/ for a complete webinar schedule and to register.
Inclusive Partners Tip of the Month
Did you know….
That all children are entitled to equal rights in childcare?
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal civil rights law stating that people with disabilities are entitled to equal rights in employment, public services, and access to places of public accommodation. Public accommodations include childcare in homes, centers, after school programs, and everywhere childcare is provided. The ADA clearly states that providers cannot refuse to enroll a child with a disability and that “reasonable accommodation” must be made to serve them. A reasonable accommodation is any adaptation or alteration of strategies to better serve all children.
Since inclusive practices support children regardless of age or ability, imbedding inclusive strategies in your daily routines, your ways of communication, and your curriculum is a win-win! Inclusive Partners (IP) can help you at no cost! IP can provide individual consultations, talk through inclusive practices that work in your childcare setting, free staff trainings, and more. Call 971-673-2286 or email DELC.InclusivePartners@ode.oregon.gov .

Getting Started: Becoming a Provider
There are two paths to becoming a child care provider: becoming a Licensed Child Care Provider or becomone a Listed Child Care Provider with DHS. Read below to learn the benefits of each type of provider and what trainings each type of provider needs to complete.

As a licensed Child Care Provider, you can care for up to 10 children at one time. To become a licensed provider through Office of Child Care (OCC), you will need to attend a free, two part Introduction to Registered Family Child Care. Part 1 can be found online at Educadium. See dates below for Part 2. You will also need to complete the required Health and Safety Schedule listed below before applying (we offer two kinds of CPR, but you only need to take one).
