Alumni Spotlight: Alan Shriner
Alan Shriner attended CCA when it first opened in the fall of 2000. He was in 1st grade at the time. When asked what he liked most about CCA he said, ”There were several things I liked about CCA. All my teachers were huge role models in my life, guiding me to be the best version of myself."
When CCA started sports, Alan was in 8th grade. He was able to play on the first soccer and basketball teams. After graduating 8th grade at CCA in May of 2008, Alan attended Clinton High School, where he graduated in 2012. Alan’s parents are Lynn and Laura Shriner and his wife is Katherine Shriner. He has two older sisters, Emily who is 7 years older and Natalie who is 5 years older. After high school Alan attended Southwest Baptist University, where he got a Political Science major and Accounting minor. He is now an EMT-B in the Kansas City Metro Area. He is also a Paramedic Student at University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine. When asked if this is what he planned on doing career wise, he said he never thought he would work in medicine. He always wanted to help people, and being a First Responder was a perfect fit!
Alan has a lot of favorite CCA memories. Attending CCA for eight years holds many memorable moments, like meeting KC Wolf in 1st grade, being saved in 2nd grade, getting a new building in 3rd grade, creating a whale out of newspaper in 4th grade, learning life skills in 5th, having class underneath the cafeteria in 6th grade, a field trip to Chicago in 7th, and playing sports in 8th. Alan’s favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Alan used to only use this verse for sports or physical activities, but growing up he has found this verse works for everything. He has used this verse in prayer a lot this year going through Paramedic School, being a full-time student and working 72 hours a week, and he said he averages 3 hours of sleep at night. Alan said when he looks towards God and asks for help, he truly can do all things through Christ who strengthens him!
When asked if there was a CCA teacher who made a positive impact in his life, Alan
replied, “ yes, there were many teachers, like Carolyn Thornton, Karen Kimbrell, Jan Prince,
Jenn Straw, Robin Dicket, Roger Bancroft, Clell Stephenson, Kelly Griffey, and Cathy Brown. All
my teachers had made a huge impact on my life and who I am today. They were truly amazing
teachers for me at CCA.” Then, we asked Alan what he does in his free time. He said he likes to
be outdoors, play sports, and spend time with his family. Alan and his wife have one child, Lila,
who is 2 years old. Alan and his wife also have two dogs, Luna, who is a Lab/Husky, and
Nimbus, who is a pure Border Collie.
We then asked if CCA had any kind of impact on his life and he said, “It’s hard to see the
good things while they are happening, but looking back, several good things happened while
attending CCA. CCA has truly had an impact on my life.”
Lastly we asked if Alan had any advice to give current CCA students and he had lots to say, “My years at CCA created a good base for my life. All my teachers and mentors set me up for success when I went out into the world. CCA gets you the knowledge you need for school, like college work before high school, but also knowledge with life. Going to public school is where I lived life and experience, but CCA created the knowledge and critical thinking I needed to be successful growing up. When going through CCA, ask your teacher questions. Ask about class, ask about their experience, ask about their thoughts on certain subjects. Listen and learn from their experience, and make your life experience better. Everyone's life will be different on different paths. Everyone's knowledge and experience will be different. CCA will help you grow at your pace, in your time; all you need to do is apply your best. Your best may not be 100% all the time, but if you give it your best, you will succeed.” There are many more CCA alumni that we will check in with soon and will let you all hear what they have to say about CCA and what it means to them! -Audrey
CCA Chapel
Empty shoeboxes are available inside the front entrance of the main building. We are asked to make the $10 donation to sponsor the mailing of each box by either mailing the check in the envelope included in your empty box or by paying the $10 donation online. Please do not place the money/envelope inside the box this year. CCA will collect filled shoeboxes through Wednesday, November 15.
For more information about Operation Christmas Child, go to the following link: https://www.samaritanspurse.org/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/ . There are some great videos your family may want to watch together that feature many touching stories from children around the world that have given their hearts to Jesus because they were the recipient of a filled shoebox! Some of our high school students will be providing an additional service by volunteering to load the semi-trucks at the First Baptist Church, which is one of the area collection centers for OCC.
You can fill the box with whatever you want, but you also must abide by the rules. You cannot add candy, liquids, war-related toys, gum, used or damaged items, breakable or glass objects, medication or vitamins, or aerosol cans. We closed chapel with the school song.
