The Cougar's Den
February 2020
Principal's Corner
As we continue with second semester I would like to highlight some of the great things that our students have accomplished so far this year.
We have approximately 79 students with a 3.0 grade point average or higher who are invited to the Honor Roll Breakfast on the 5th. This event is hosted by our staff to recognize those students and their outstanding academic achievement.
We have over 32 students currently enrolled in AVID. They will be visiting CWI and BSU this spring. AVID stands for "Advancement via Individual Determination." This program provides students with the necessary skills to succeed in college.
We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our students.
Thank You & Go Cougars!

Boise Schools Continue to Expand High-Quality Classes and Programs
Since our first school opened in 1865, students have been offered a top education. Through innovation and a dedication to push our students to be their best, we help mold some of the brightest kids in our state. Some stats to be proud of:
Four high schools named ‘Most Challenging’ by the Washington Post for 10+ years
90% graduation rate
67% go on to college within 2 years (top in the state)
More National Merit Scholar semi-finalists than any other district in Idaho
Pre-AP English 10 is Now Available
As registration rapidly approaches, we are excited to announce that Pre-AP English 10 will be available next year at Frank Church High School. Pre-AP is open to all and is designed to give every student the opportunity to learn the foundational knowledge and skills they need to be successful in AP and other college-level coursework.
How Will Students Benefit from Pre-AP English 10?
Instruction focuses on building important skills and confidence.
Students learn to apply evidence and think critically, not just memorize facts and figures.
Students engage with interdisciplinary skills in all their courses, reinforcing conceptual learning.
Why Pre-AP?
Pre-AP classes prepare high school students for Advanced Placement classes (college-level classes taken in high school) as well as college classes themselves. Pre-AP English prepares all sophomores for the rigors of junior and senior level classes, and prepares those who are interested in taking AP English Literature and Composition and AP Language and Composition.
What Do You Mean When You Say Pre-AP is for All Students?
Pre-AP courses are the baseline standard for all students. There are no barriers to Pre-AP as it is designed to serve all students.
More Options than Ever for College & Career Prep
We prioritize providing best-in-class programs, education, and support that helps students realize their full potential post-graduation, like:
25 Advanced Placement Classes
AVID
Career & Technical Opportunities
School-based Classes & Dennis Technical Center Programs are available
Extended Day Tutoring
Our Academic Interventionists will be in the Community School Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15-4:10. Snacks are available.
Students can come and work on their missing assignments or get the extra instruction they might need. Don't wait until the end of the quarter to get help or get caught up. Start the quarter off right and get that credit without last minute stress.
Winter Weather and the Boise School District
Education is important and every missed day of school represents lost learning opportunities. However, the Boise School District's primary concern is for the safety of all students, including students riding busses and walking or biking to school. If students cannot safely travel to school or if schools are not able to operate safely because of city-wide dangerous weather conditions, school may be cancelled.
We will not cancel school on days with normal wintery conditions. Light snowfall, cold mornings or areas of ice are not sufficiently dangerous to force the closure of schools. With proper precautions including appropriate clothing, road deicing, and careful driving, students can travel to and from school safely.
If school will be closed, we will communicate to local radio and television stations to spread the word. We will also email parents, send a text message, and post closure information at www.boiseschools.org and on our Twitter account @BSDEducation. To sign-up for the District’s emergency text messaging service text SUBSCRIBE to the number 68453.
If parents believe it is too dangerous for their children to travel to school they have the option to keep their children home. If school is cancelled, it will be cancelled for the entire District.
