Assistive Technology in the IEP
IEP Documentation
If the IEP Team determines that assistive technology devices and/or services are needed, where is this reflected in the IEP?
AT devices and services should be reflected in the IEP in the following areas:
Present Level of Academic and Functional Performance
Annual Goals and Objectives
Assistive Technology Section
Accommodations
Prior Written Notice
Assistive Technology Section (DEC 4 - IEP)
Does the student require assistive technology devices and/or services? Yes
If yes, describe needs:
In this section, include the type of assistive technology, including devices needed (not specific names of devices), the reasons why these are needed, and how they will be used.
This box at the end of the goals indicates if the student requires AT that is specific to the student. This serves as a way to "flag" the need for technology so that someone who is reading the IEP will know to look in the IEP to determine what assistive technology is needed for this student. The description should always describe the features the student needs and not state the brand name of the device/equipment. This allows the IEP team flexibility with providing the necessary supports for the student as technology needs change.
Here are more examples:
What NOT to write in the AT box: Read&Write for Google Chrome tools
What to write in the AT box: Word prediction with auditory feedback
What NOT to write in the AT box: Ipad with TouchChat application
What to write in the AT box: Portable touch screen device with communication software
What NOT to write in the AT box: Big Mac voice output device, SymbolStix pictures
What to write in the AT box: Single message voice output device, picture symbols
Should the specific ‘brand name’ of the assistive technology device be written in a student’s IEP?
No. The IEP Team should not include specific device brand or model names. The IEP Team should include a description of the features of the AT device that the student may need in his/her academic setting.
What should IEP Teams do when the parents/guardians have requested that the specific brand name of the assistive technology device be documented in the IEP?
Document this in either the Considerations of Transitions or in the Parent Concerns which can be found under the Eligibility and Special Factors section of the IEP Process. It does not need to be added to the DEC 5.
Accommodations (DEC 4 - IEP)
General Education Program Accommodations
Class/Activity: Language Arts
Accommodations: assistive devices (selected from list or add custom accommodation)
Implementation Specifications: Describe who will provide what accommodation under what circumstances (who, what, when, where?).
