July 2021
Ira Harbison
Welcome Letter
Ira Harbison Community:
I could not be happier to welcome you back to the 2021-2022 school year, I have missed you all so much! To our new Hawk Families, welcome to our community! We are so honored that you have chosen to send your child(ren) to Ira Harbison.
So much has changed since we saw you last. We realize that for many of you it has been over a year since you set foot on our campus. Come July 26th, we will be doing our best to make you feel welcome and safe upon your return. For those of you who were on campus for our Hybrid instruction there are even some changes that might be new for you!
It is a privilege to be a part of a community that strives to build positive relationships that support academic success and social growth. This year, the partnership between school and home is more important than ever. We must work together to support all of our students as we transition out of Distance Learning and back into the classroom. The physical and social-emotional safety of our students, families, and staff will remain as the highest priority.
We will strive to make sure that everyone is happy, safe, and successful. Our immensely talented staff will be focused on each child’s unique needs and will design a pathway for learning that builds upon their strengths, supports their areas of need and tailors learning experiences best suited for their specific goals.
I encourage you to attend the first Coffee Chat on August 11th at 8:30am where we will be discussing the upcoming school year and ways that you can connect with the school community. This will be a virtual event.
You will be able to see your child's teacher in ParentVue on Friday, July 23rd after 4pm.

Get to Know Ms Meghann
I am a native San Diegan who didn't know how lucky I had it until I left our sunny city for the cold weather of Massachusetts for college. Upon graduation I left the Northeast to return to San Diego. I stated teaching with San Diego Unified and couldn't have been happier in the classroom! Over the course of my career I have held a variety of different jobs in the education field.
I was fortunate enough to join a team of extraordinary teachers who opened the first ever elementary school in the High Tech High network. I learned first hand from progressive educators such as Ron Berger, Alfie Kohn and Larry Rosenstock that a student's voice and choice are essential elements in education. After three rewarding years with High Tech Elementary I made the decision to move into administration.
I spent two years as a part of a dynamic team of educators at King-Chavez Academy of Excellence (KCAE) in Barrio Logan, a culturally rich neighborhood in San Diego.
For three years, 2016 - 2019, I had the privilege of working in Wilmette, Illinois in District 39.
After three years in Illinois, following my husband's Naval career, my family and I returned home to my native sunny San Diego. I am currently the Principal of Ira Harbison Elementary in National City.
I have two preschool aged children who love to read, visit the zoo and splash in the pool! My husband left the Navy when we returned and is now working for the Navy as a civilian. My parents are still in the San Diego area and I live down the street from my brother and his family.
I love what I do and couldn't imagine doing anything else!
