Franklin Public Schools Summer Update #3
PLANNING FOR THE FIRST FEW DAYS OF SCHOOL
As we approach the start of the 2021-22 school year, we want to make you aware of the structure for the first few school days so you can best plan for your family. We heard a lot of great feedback from families and staff last year about our “staggered start” and how it helped to launch in-person learning successfully. Therefore, we are planning for a trimmed-down version of last year’s staggered start for this year. While in smaller groups on the first two days of school, students will work with teachers on these days to better understand school and classroom norms, technology expectations, safety protocols, lunch procedures, recess routines, bus arrival/departure processes, and more.

The days that students do not attend during the first week are considered non-school days for those students. This means students will not be assigned any homework or virtual work; they will have no school requirements on those days when they are not in session. In addition, for students in grades 5K through 8, if you have a blended family with two last names, you may send those students on the same day during the first week of school. School office staff returns to the buildings beginning August 2nd so please inform them of any special circumstances after that date. More information about the start of the school year will come from the school buildings as school newsletters start going out to families in late August.
Here are some other details related to specific audiences:
Franklin High School Schedule - Please note that all freshmen (9th grade) and all students of any grade 10-12 that are new to Franklin High School should report on Wednesday 9/1. Details about how this day will be structured will be shared closer to the start of school. Then, on Thursday 9/2, all students grades 9-12 report for a scheduled B Day.
Virtual Students/Families - As we get more information about how our virtual programs will start for Edmentum (K-8) and Wisconsin E-School Network (9-12), we will communicate directly with those virtual families about start dates and expectations. These details may differ from the information presented here.
Before/After School Care Only - Please note that Kids Club, through our Community & Recreation Department will not be able to hold full-day child care sessions on these “Start of the School Year” days since students in session will be utilizing the larger spaces that are typically used for Kids Club. Community & Rec will be providing before and after school Kids Club only for the students attending based on alphabet breakdown on those days.
As we build toward the start of the school year, we are sure you will have questions. We have revamped our 'Reopening Doors’ webpage from last year into a brand new FPS Communications Hub where we will park all relevant information and communications that we share to help keep families informed about district-wide news. You can view the new Communication Hub at
Part of the FPS Communication Hub is a newly updated Start of 2021-22 FAQ with questions/answers you may be wondering about. We will continue to update this as we approach the start of the school year like we did last year. If you have a question that is not already addressed in the FAQ, please use the ‘Question Form’ on that page to submit your question so it can be routed to the best individual(s) to help you.
Thank you for taking the time to read and digest all of this information. By structuring the first few days of school in this way, we hope to give students and staff time to adjust to the start of a brand new school year. Thank you for all that you are doing to help make Franklin Public Schools a Better Place to Learn, a Better Place to Work, and part of a Better Community.
Thank you,
Dr. Judy Mueller
District Administrator

COVID-19 UPDATES & VACCINE INFORMATION
As a school system, we work hard to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in our schools so that we can continue in-person learning throughout the school year. We will share updates with you so you can do your part to help our schools to successfully stay open. According to the Franklin Health Department and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS), the best way to stop the spread of COVID-19 is to get vaccinated. Below is some information from DHS about the available vaccines and you can click here to find a COVID-19 vaccine near you.
DHS encourages anyone age 12 and older to get their COVID-19 vaccination now, so they will be protected against COVID-19 in time for the 2021-2022 school year.
- For children ages 12 and up, the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is the only vaccine currently available for this age group. The Pfizer vaccine requires two doses, spaced 21 days apart. Schedule the first dose by August 2nd to be fully vaccinated by Labor Day.
- Anyone ages 18 and up is eligible for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, which also requires two doses, spaced 28 days apart. Schedule the first dose by July 26th in order to be fully vaccinated by Labor Day.
- The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is also authorized for those ages 18 years and up, but only requires one dose. Schedule this shot by August 23rd in order to be fully vaccinated by Labor Day.
