CDS First Program
The Weekly Word from CDS FP, Aug 19–21, 2020
Welcome back. It was fantastic to have students back in the classroom with classmates and teachers. It was both a safe and interesting first week of school! The new systems, policies, and procedures to establish a safe learning environment have begun to take hold. We will continue to adapt as necessary, but overall I am proud of our students and teachers for doing a wonderful job during our first days of school. I hope this is the only time during our students’ education that they have to begin a year with such safety protocols in place as these days. Meanwhile, our students are learning to be more adaptable to new environments, better problem solvers, and they are collaborating and thinking critically while doing so.
Parents, too, thank you for your support with the changes. It is not easy for anyone, but with the collaboration amongst the faculty and families, we are making progress.
The Fall Season begins on Monday. This means that Labs begin on Monday as do Athletics, as well as After School Program (ASP). Lab sign-ups have been posted. Note that we expect a few changes the first week with students either yet to sign up or those wanting to make changes.
We are off to a great start!
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill
Director of First Program
Arrival and Dismissal
Drop off and arrival during the first two days of school (Wed and Thu) were hectic. On Friday there was a significant improvement.
An important update is regarding the back gate; it will be open in the morning and the afternoon. This means that you may drive to the FP building, drop off your child, and proceed past the townhouses, horses, and then out the back gate. Note that the road is one way. No entry via the back gate will be permitted.
The back gate will be open at the following times:
Monday – Thursday
7:30 am – 8:10 am
4:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Friday
2:30 pm – 3:20 pm
Regarding Academies / Hogwans
Please note that all CDS students are strongly discouraged from attending any non-essential academies/hogwans during this sensitive period where we are highly concerned about COVID-19 and our community’s health. Safe practices on and off campus are encouraged by all community members.
One reason that CDS could move to complete online learning is if someone—just one person—in our community attends an academy where there is a COVID positive person. No one wants to be the single person responsible for school closing. CDS can only control the safety policies within our campus.
Please use good judgement when deciding on what activities you will participate in off campus.
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill
Dates to Know!
August 24 Fall Season begins
FP Athletics
Due to the current situation, we are unable to have jamborees and play against teams from other schools at this time. CDS athletics will attempt to meet the needs of those active students with the FP Dalton Showdown every Monday during ASP time (4:00–5:00pm).
Each week we will offer a different sport for different age groups. Students can sign up for the event and play against other students from CDS.
Students are unable to sign up for every Monday event, as the age groups vary, but they can pick and choose which Monday events they would like to join in on. Much like our other school events, parents and spectators are unable to attend for now.

Lab (co-curriculars) Fall Season
Athletics, Lab and After School Program (ASP) begin on Monday, August 24!
Lab:
Please see the Lab selection results. Note that during the first week there are always some changes that made, usually because a student wishes to make a change.
Selections have been made by students during the first week of school.
After School Program (ASP) (extra-curriculars) Fall Season
Athletics, Lab and After School Program (ASP) begin on Monday, August 24!
ASP:
Offerings for ASP occur on Tue Wed Thu Fri (not Mon).
After School Program begins this week. Lists of attendees are shared and will be updated as changes are made.
Items listed in green are confirmed, e.g. we have enough students, etc.
Items listed in red are tentative, e.g. we have a problem with the numbers, e.g. too few or too many.
Note that if you signed up, but you do not see your name, it is likely because the ASP canceled, or the student is not eligible (too young), etc. In these cases, every person will be contacted by phone, individually (starting Monday).
Teaching and Learning Care (TLC) — Assessing and Addressing Student Needs
In response to E-Learning and the impact on our students' learning, FP has added two classes per week to the timetable: Teaching and Learning Care — Assessing and Addressing Student Needs.
These TLC classes take the place of what was Tue/Thu Labs in the past.
This will occur for at least the Fall Season.
Ms. (Jennifer) Kim will offer a parent session to provide more information about the classes. Details about when and how will be shared at a later date.
