Comparative Poetry Analysis
Weston Fields Hour 3
Introduction
There are many poems about nature, but two good ones are Ode to Enchanted Light and Problems with Hurricanes. Ode to Enchanted light describes the light in a forest. Problems with Hurricanes is about fruit in a hurricane. I will be comparing and contrasting these two poems on their tone and word choice, figurative language, and form and structure.
Tone and Word Choice
The poets' attitudes toward nature are slightly different in the two poems. In Ode to Enchanted Light, the poet focuses on the beauty of nature. This is shown in lines 3-7 when they say, "light like a green latticework of branches, shining on every leaf," In Problems with Hurricanes, the poets attitude toward nature is respectful, as he realizes the danger. This is shown in lines 25-27 when he says, "The campesino takes off his hat- As a sign of respect toward the fury of the wind"
Figurative Language
The poem Ode to Enchanted Light has alliteration, similes, and a metaphor. In Problems with Hurricanes, there is just one metaphor. The whole poem is a metaphor about life. This will be explained later in this flyer. Ode to Enchanted Light has alliteration in lines 3-7 and 10-11. It gives the poem rhythm when it says, "A cicada sends its sawing song". There is a simile in lines 8-9 when it says, "drifting down like clean white sand." There is also a metaphor in lines 13-15. "The world is a glass overflowing with water." As you can plainly see, the poem Ode to Enchanted Light has much more figurative language than Problems with Hurricanes.
Form and Structure
Both of the two poems have no rhyme scheme and uneven lines. However, in Ode to enchanted Light, it is designed so that if you turn it sideways, it looks like sunlight drifting through the trees. Also, it has rhythm in lines 10-11, and is only three sentences long. In Problems with Hurricanes, there is no rhythm, and has punctuation and capitalization errors.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while both poems have similar structure and a similar attitude toward nature, they are different relating to figurative language. Ode to Enchanted Light has much, while Problems with Hurricanes has very little. The meaning of Problems with Hurricanes is that harmless things, like fruit, can be deadly in the right circumstances. The main point of Ode to Enchanted Light is that nature is beautiful and we should respect it.
