Teaching Self-Regulation
Have you ever been told to “calm down” when you are feeling frustrated and does it actually help you calm down? My guess is no, it does not work! For most people, feeling silenced or judged in a difficult moment only makes the situation worse. The same goes for children.
Self-regulation is the ability to manage your own feelings and behaviours. This isn’t an easy task for adults, let alone, for kids to learn. Their brain development does not allow them to be able to control their reactions to certain situations yet, however, we can teach and model self-regulation to gain some practice. “To teach self-regulation to children, we must help them feel seen, heard and validated. Try this next time your child is dysregulated:
Take a moment to make sure YOU are calm before responding.
Acknowledge the feelings: “You must have had a hard day. It sounds like you are upset.”
Listen without interrupting.
Address the behaviour AFTER your child is calm.
Calm, empathetic responses to big feelings make your child feel seen and heard, and they’ll learn that it’s safe to share their feelings with you.” (Big Life Journal, 2023). Remember, all feelings are okay, all behaviours are not. By waiting until they are calm to address the behaviour, you can have a better conversation on ways to handle things differently in the future. Check out Big Life Journal’s guide on teaching your child self-regulation tools below.
