On Tuesday September 16, twelve Mott Middle College students performed for hundreds of attendees at the 25th annual “Donald Riegle Community Service Awards”, held at the Flint Institute of Arts. The awards recognize individual’s commitment and dedication to community service.
The event is sponsored by the Flint Jewish Federation. Tickets for the event cost $125 each. The fundraiser provides services and acculturation programs for refuges and other immigrants in Genesee county.
Donald Reigle, a Flint native, served from 1966 to 1994 in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. He was instrumental in helping bring refugees out of the Soviet Union and resettling them in our area.
Flint Jewish Federation Executive Director Steven Lowe calls the event “one of the premier events in Flint ... it’s one of the most diverse groups to come together”. This year’s award recipients were Debra Golden-Steinman, Phil Shaltz, and Ernelle Taylor.
When the Mott “Steelheads” began to perform, one of the first people to greet the band was the new Mott Community College president Beverly Walker - Griffea. She immediately began videoing the band, then tweeted about the band and talked with individual band members.
The following Mott Middle College band members performed: Terryance Bradley, LaJala Clark, Cherelle Dunbar, RonDajah Humphries, Tatyana Hunter, Kevin Jackson, Joe Kirkland, David Krawczyk, Courtney Leonard, Roshecia Peeples, Jelisha Terry, Susan Vincent, and director Jim Coviak. The band has played at the “Reigle Awards” each year for over a decade.
