2018-19 SCHOOL YEAR
Coeur d'Alene Public Schools — August 28, 2018
DEAR CdA Schools family
We hope you and your students had a wonderful summer and are ready for the first day of the 2018-19 school year on Tuesday, September 4. We are ready for you! The next few weeks may seem overwhelming as we adjust to new routines, but this also is a time to revel in the joy of new faces, challenges and opportunities each new year brings. We are excited to begin the journey with you.
Greetings from Superintendent Cook
Hello! I'm Steven Cook, your new Superintendent of Coeur d'Alene Public Schools. Over the summer I've been getting to know our community, our schools and staff, and the high expectations we have for our public school system. And in the coming weeks and months you will have opportunities to meet me, ask questions and share your thoughts. Until then, please take a few minutes to watch this short video, in which I share some suggestions for how we can work together to make this school year a great success. Thanks!

It's Open House Week!
Open House events are tonight and tomorrow! Join us to meet school staff, find out what's new, catch up with friends, and more. Find times on our home page and all school websites.
New School Tip Line
Now you can report potential threats or dangerous behaviors (online threats, fighting, bullying, drugs, etc.) easily — and anonymously — from any school website homepage with our new TIP LINE. Before school starts, we urge you to have a conversation with your student about the importance of reporting, even if they feel something might be fake. Student tips can prevent violence, self-harm and threatening behaviors in others. We encourage students — and our entire community — to report.
Immunization Clinics
Panhandle Health District offers FREE, walk-in Immunization Clinics for students at its office, 8500 N. Atlas Road, in Hayden. No appointment is necessary. Bring your child's immunization record and insurance card if insured. Clinics are 5-7 pm on Aug. 30, Sept. 6 and Sept. 13. More information available here.
Vaccinations While You Shop: You may be able to get your child’s vaccinations at the walk-up Pharmacy Counter with no appointment. See your pharmacist for details.
Resources for Learning at Home
It is easy to support your student's learning at home with these parent resources! With parent guides, you can partner with our instructional staff to follow along with your student. The guides outline what your student will learn this year and activities you can do at home to help them succeed, with course calendars for many grade levels and subject areas. Additionally, assessment dates and descriptions will help you ensure your child is in school and ready to do their very best.
Meal Program Changes
Important changes have been made to the Free and Reduced meal programs at Borah, Bryan, Fernan and Winton elementary schools, Lakes Middle School and Venture High School. Previously, ALL STUDENTS attending Fernan, Bryan, Winton and Lakes were welcome to eat breakfast at NO CHARGE. At Borah and Venture, ALL STUDENTS were welcome to eat breakfast and lunch at NO CHARGE.
Here's what is new:
- Students who meet eligibility guidelines will continue to receive breakfast and lunch at no charge, or at the reduced price of 30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch.
- All other students will pay the same rate as students at other schools in the district: $1.60 for breakfast and $2.70 for lunch.
To receive free or reduced-price meals, families need to fill out an application. To see the income eligibility for free/reduced-price meals, and to download an application, go to www.cdaschools.org/mealapp. Please contact our Nutrition Services Department with any questions or concerns about our meal program. Call (208) 667-7469.
OUR NEW BUSES HAVE SEAT BELTS
Our newest school buses have seat belts for student riders, providing an extra level of protection in case of a strong collision or rollover accident. This is the first time the school district has purchased buses with seat belts. The three-point lap and shoulder belts are easy to buckle and unbuckle, just like the safety restraints kids are accustomed to using in family cars. The six buses with seat belts have been assigned to these routes and schools:
ROUTE 5 (bus No. 37): Hayden Meadows Elementary School, Canfield Middle School, Coeur d'Alene High School, KTEC, Boys & Girls Club
ROUTE 21 (bus No. 18): Fernan STEM Academy, Lakes Middle School, Lake City High School
ROUTE 22 (bus No. 8): Lakes Middle School, Lake City High School
ROUTE 23 (bus No. 9): Winton Elementary School, Lakes Middle School, Lake City High School
ROUTE 28 (bus No. 11): Fernan STEM Academy, Lakes Middle School, Coeur d'Alene High School
ROUTE 81 (bus No. 108): Atlas Elementary School, Northwest Expedition Academy, Woodland Middle School, Lake City High School
