Where are they now? Academy Alumni Report - MacKenzie Sexton
After attending Skagit Academy for 8 1/2 years and graduating from Skagit Valley College, MacKenzie Sexton attended the University of Idaho and graduated in the spring of 2020 with a mechanical engineering degree and a minor in Spanish. She completed an internship with NASA in the summer of 2019 and now she's working with the same center for her research in grad school. Currently, MacKenzie lives in a suburb of Washington DC and is working on her master's degree in aerospace engineering at the university of Maryland. Her focus is in flight dynamics and control of helicopters and other rotorcraft. MacKenzie loves cooking, longboarding, rollerblading, hiking, kayaking, and playing disc golf.
"So the story behind this picture is that I was leading a team that was designing a carbon fiber payload for the University of Idaho high altitude balloon team (Vandal Atmospheric Science Team, or VAST). The idea was to make a lighter and stronger replacement for the foam payload. So, I'm posing with a prototype core made from laser-cut plywood. If COVID hadn't hit when it did, we would have cut a smaller version of this box, attached a bunch of hardware to it, and encased it in carbon fiber. It then would have been attached to a weather balloon and sent 80,000-100,000 feet up in the atmosphere."
Update on K-1 Return Onsite
Information will be sent to SA families this week about our optional K-1 onsite schedule set to begin Monday, February 22. Please watch our district's video outlining the school's safety protocols. All but the segment on transportation applies to SA as well.
"Dancing" by 11th Grader Mercedes Rodriguez
1,2,3… 1,2,3…
Nowhere to be. No special thing.
It was an early summer afternoon in Havana, Cuba
A weekend and no work
The sun shone but the clouds shied the golden circle
The air was much too wet
It allowed for the regular, short sleeves and updos
No silence but salsa for miles ahead
The streets filled with its eclectic clave beat
The source journeyed to the doorstep of a man and a woman
A pair of sky blue sandals that reflected most days in Havana and vamp Cuban heels tapped on cracked white tiles
A couple, snuggly hand in hand, glided across their doorstep
The woman twirled leisurely in the warm hands of the man as he smiled
As he swayed on the doorstep, she twirled herself away into the aroma of the roasted Cuban coffee that awaited in her kitchen
She admired its bitter smokiness that engulfed her mouth, even in the sweltering condition
The nutty aroma travelled to the extent of the music and far beyond
Attaching her hand to his, she landed back in place of his constant vision
There, the pair mirrored each other’s bright smiles
Dancing in the gaze of one another, they continued with the steps
1,2,3… 1,2,3…
