Science
Phlegm: Liquid or Solid?
In this activity your student(s) will learn how to differentiate the physical properties of the three states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases. There are endless examples of all three states of matter throughout the human body. There are also many examples that do not quite fit into one category or the other. One such example is the phlegm produced in the respiratory tract when an individual gets sick. In this activity, students will create a batch of fake phlegm using water, white glue, and Borax. They will observe its physical properties as they manipulate it and run it through a few tests. The purpose of the activity is not for students to get to one right answer over the other. Instead, students will use their results to support their claims with the observations they make during the lab.
History
There are 50 Fun and Free Activities around San Diego that provide a wide variety of historically valuable opportunities. CLICK HERE to find out about free events, like the Inter-tribal Pow-wow at the San Luis Rey Mission on June 8th & 9th. Or check out the 2019 Sandcastle Building Competition. Scroll through the list and decide what activities will benefit your students the most! See you there!
Math
Check out this article for some great summer resources to use with your students. You will not only find suggestions for maintaining math skills over the summer, but also resources and ways to help your student in reading. Often times over the summer students can lose some of the skills they've built up during the school year. Spending just a little time each week during the summer months can help your next school year start smoothly.
