Teachers help students find important things they've lost. Sometimes it is a paper, a backpack, or a jacket. Other times it is courage, confidence, or a smile. -Unknown

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - OCTOBER 23:
On the 23rd, we will meet together as a staff in the morning. In the afternoon, you will have team meetings with specific learning objectives and planning time. The agenda will come out early next week.
On January 3rd, we will have our vertical team professional development day.
We are looking for teachers to present. This is an opportunity for you to gain PPfT points by leading professional development. The "table sessions" are 25 minute conversations about a specific strategy or lesson that you have taught.
Teachers, please consider signing up for to teach a table session on our teacher-led PD on January 3rd at Anderson HS. As a staff, I feel we have many great things to share!
Topics include : Whole Child, Innovative Technology, etc. This is a great opportunity to show professional leadership! Leading professional development shows us that you are willing to go above and beyond, and we take this into consideration as we evaluate PPfT Professional Growth and Responsibilities. You are awesome, and we love to see you shine! Please click on the link below for more info and to sign up. Submission date is 11/1:

LEADERSHIP TEAM:
No meeting on due to conferences.
2018 BENEFITS:
Our school is scheduled for open enrollment on Monday, October 23rd from 7:00-3:30. Since we are having professional development that day, I am trying to get this rescheduled. Stay tuned.
REPORT CARD WINDOW:
The report card posting window closes next Tuesday, October 17th at 4PM. All report cards must be posted and comments entered. Please do not wait until the last minute to complete your grades. New this year - no finalize button and no ESL grades. Thank you!
INSTRUCTION
Here are some best practices to consider and reflect on.
Literacy:
Are your students picking a just right book that interest them? What strategies have you given students in order to ensure that they have just right books to read?
How long are your students reading to self during the instructional day? Sustained reading time leads to gained stamina!
How do we know students are getting something out of their reading to self time? CONFERENCING! Talking with each student (and documenting) is a great way to provide specific student feedback and move students forward in their reading practices.
Individual student conferences and feedback are a critical piece to the literacy model. Students respond to specific teacher feedback and guidance. Listening to your students read on a regular basis will help you know how to guide them and challenge them.
Help for struggling readers? How and when do you work with your struggling readers?
ELL students and struggling students need small group instruction from their general education teacher in order to gain reading proficiency. Small ground instruction can occur during the read to self time daily in the general education setting.
ELL students should have text to read that is on their level. They benefit greatly by reading with the general education teacher in the small group setting. Want to see your low kids grow? Read with them and provide teacher feedback daily.
What suggestions do YOU have to share with the campus? What best practices do you practice daily to move your students forward with their literacy skills?
TEAM ACTION: Talk as a team this next week about what you are doing to grow your kids' literacy skills.
Share with me and I will share with the campus!
NEED A SUB?
It seems we need a refresher on how to find/book a substitute. While they are happy to help you, it is not Johanna and Monique's responsibility to find a sub for you!
Follow these three steps if you are needing to take a sick, personal, vacation, school business or professional development day.
- Call your preferred sub. If your preferred sub is not available then see the shared drive for a list of available subs. Johanna will be sending weekly emails with new subs, so be sure to write them down and put them in your phone in case you need them on the weekend.
- AFTER YOU SUB HAS AGREED to come in, request him/her in AESOP. This is necessary for them to be paid.
- Log into BOLT and request your time off. You will need to do this even if you are taking a professional development day or school business. You will not be docked for professional development or school business.
If you need help putting a sub in the AESOP system please ask Johanna or Monique. If you need help requesting time off in Bolt, ask Johanna or Adriana.
If you need help with your password, here are the numbers you will need to call:
AESOP 4-2611
Bolt Hotline 4-2658
ATTENDANCE CLERK HOURS
Johanna 7:00-11:00
Monique 11:00-3:00
Adriana 7:30-4:30
LOCKDOWN DRILL:
We will have a lockdown drill on 10/18 at 8AM. Please see procedures below:
• Conducted for intruder or violence on campus.
• Lockdown should take no longer than 30 seconds to complete.
• Warning to lock down will be given via PA. "Please send your red folder to the office"
• Enter nearest room.
• Do a quick visual sweep of the area in front of door. (If any students or parents are in the hallway bring them into your room)
• Close and lock room door(s) and window(s). Barricade if possible.
• Cover door window and exterior windows by any means necessary. (Please take these down after drill)
• Turn off all lights.
• Silence cell phones (do not turn them off).
• Spread students out around the room but away from the door.
• Wait for official notice to end the lockdown.
• If outdoors during a lockdown, run away and hide.
The district has moved away from putting the green cards on the door. These are an indicator that someone is in the room. Instead, slide your red card under the door if there is a serious problem and you are able to. (intruder is in the room/someone is injured). In the event of a real lockdown you may want to have an activity to keep small children quiet. Ex; coloring sheets and crayons, word search.
CANNED FOOD DRIVE - COMING SOON!
Our annual canned food drive will be earlier than usual this year! Due to early release days and The Nutcracker, we couldn't get buses for 3rd graders to deliver the can collection right before winter break like we usually do. Because of this, we needed to switch our dates to BEFORE Thanksgiving Break- almost a month earlier than usual. Here's our new schedule:
Friday, October 27th
Announce at morning assembly
Monday, October 30 - Thursday, November 9
Collect cans. We will not accept any cans after 8AM on Thursday, Nov 9th.
Friday, November 10th
Announce class winners at morning assembly
Monday, November 13-16th
3rd grade delivers cans + tour & nutrition class
Ms. Barrick will let you know what 3rd grade classes are picking up what grade level closer to the drive.
