Superintendent's Message, August 18th
Dear PfISD Parents and Guardians,
What a first week! I want to begin this week’s update by giving so much thanks and praise to everyone who helped make the first few days of our virtual learning a success.
The teachers came through in a big way for our students, and our principals provided strong leadership for each of our campuses to shine in this challenging moment as we began a school year like no other. And I don’t want to leave out another essential group of people who made the start of this school year so successful – the parents!
Our PfISD parents were rock stars last week. We know it can be challenging to start a school year entirely online like we all have had to, but your help in getting your children ready to learn and tackle this challenge head-on really helped make Thursday and Friday so smooth.
Thank you to everyone for coming together how you did. Together is our theme this year, and it made me so happy to see all aspects of our District come together to play their role and get the 2020-21 school year off to a wonderful start.
One thankful parent posted to Facebook: “Kudos to everyone at Dearing Elementary and PFISD who came together in this uncertain time to come up with a solution to help educate our children the best way they know how without being face to face. You guys are rock stars!”
Of course, launching a new school year completely online is not going to be without a few hiccups. We know some families had issues logging into their laptops. (We will address that later in this update.) And we know that some families would prefer we physically be in the classroom right now.
Whatever your feelings are toward online learning or in-person learning, I am a firm believer that whatever attitude you embody will be what your children will adopt as well. I encourage you always to have a positive attitude toward the District’s learning plans whenever you are in front of your children. If you are positive and excited about online learning, your children will bring a positive attitude to their online classes and learning experience.
I also know that some students will rebel no matter what their parents say or ask of them. And we did have some behavior and online safety issues pop up during the first week of online learning.
Some students have used inappropriate language toward their classmates and teachers during synchronous (live) learning sessions. This is unacceptable. This behavior would not be tolerated in a physical classroom, and it will not be tolerated in a virtual one either. Just because we are not physically in a room together at this time does not give students a license to behave any differently than they usually would in a classroom. We still expect our students and teachers to be respectful to everyone. This type of behavior distracts from the lesson and hinders the learning experience for everyone.
Secondly, we are aware of some students posting the login credentials to their classroom Zoom meetings on social media. This is a potential safety threat and a direct violation of our Live Interactions: Privacy and Confidentiality Agreement. Part of this agreement reads: “You agree to not audiotape, videotape, record, or photograph, in any manner, the virtual/teleservices/telephonic lesson or any communications related to the setup or closing of the session by the school provider.” This means you are NOT to post the meeting logins to social media, creating the potential for anyone to log into the meetings. Students caught sharing, posting, or distributing these live meeting locations, and logins will face disciplinary measures.
Despite these few shortcomings, all-in-all it was a successful beginning to our school year. I would love to see that momentum carry through this week and further as we strive to provide an engaging educational experience for our students, just in a different way right now.
Thank you to everyone who played a role in making the first week a success. Let’s keep working together in this effort. Now on to some other important topics.
Student Device Updates
If you are still in need of a laptop or tablet for your student, please contact your campus for the availability of devices. As a reminder, all secondary students have the option to request a Chromebook. Elementary students can request a device, and we will do our best to provide one. We have ordered several more chargers to provide should the campus indicate they do not have a charger for a laptop.
Some of you have said your laptop did not come with the protective sleeve. Additional sleeves were recently delivered to the campuses, so the students who did not receive one can contact their campus to make arrangements to pick one up.
After recent events in multiple Districts across the state, we have implemented additional security options. For all future Zoom sessions:
- Attendees cannot join a meeting before the host
- Attendees must wait in a Waiting Room to be allowed in by the host
- Attendees must use appropriate names that match their given name
- Attendees must not change their name after joining the meeting
- Hosts cannot remove password settings
If you are having trouble logging onto your district device or having other technology-related issues, please contact the PfISD Technology Department through PfISD’s Let’s Talk website: https://www.pfisd.net/Page/7772. Click on the Technology tab to fill out a questionnaire that will go directly to a staff member who can assist you.
Changing Your In-Person vs. Online Choice
The choice selection window for virtual or on-campus learning has closed for the first 9-week grading period. Parents will have the option to change their student’s learning selection to virtual or on-campus learning at the end of the first 9-weeks grading period and can do so by contacting their campus registrar. We would, however, encourage you to avoid changing your selection multiple times. It is possible that when you switch from online to in-person or in-person to online that your child’s teacher or class schedule may change. We understand that circumstances may change and force a change in your decision as well. We want everyone to find a learning choice they are comfortable with for their children and family.
On-Campus Learning Survey Out Soon
The District will be sending out another survey to parents and staff later this week to gain feedback on when the District should resume on-campus learning. Our Board of Trustees has already approved a waiver for extending virtual learning by an additional four weeks if it becomes necessary. We will continue to monitor the guidance from state and local authorities, along with feedback from our staff and parents, to guide our decisions regarding returning to the classroom.
Again, I cannot reiterate enough how proud I am of our students, teachers, and parents for making the start of school such a success. It proves what we can accomplish when we come together to achieve a common goal. In this instance, we are all working together to make sure our students receive the high-quality education they deserve while delivering lessons in an unprecedented way.
Thank you, parents, for your dedication to your child’s education. Thank you for your patience in all these changes and modifications to our school year. It is different for everyone involved, but that does not mean it is bad. Finding the beauty and opportunity in the difference can make this a valuable learning experience for us all.
In the best interest of children,
