Barrows Starburst Newsletter
9-15-19
Week of September 16 - 20
Hello Barrows Community,
I have heard nothing but rave reviews about the picnic on Friday night. Special thanks to Janee Tichy for all her hard work organizing the event and to all the families who attended. The weather was perfect for an evening outside with friends!
This week we have our first PTO meeting. It is tomorrow (9/16) at 7:00 in the library. During our meetings, we hear updates from committees, plan events, and discuss things happening at Barrows. All are welcome to attend!
I have noticed children being dropped off before 8:10. Please remember that there is no supervision before the teachers go outside at 8:10.
We have a new paraeducator to welcome to Barrows starting tomorrow. Lisa Juliano will be supervising recesses and lunches as well as covering in classrooms as needed. Welcome to Mrs. Juliano!
Reach out with any comments, questions or concerns.
Have a wonderful week -
Beth

A note from Nurse Rose
Dear Parents,
While there have been no reported cases of EEE in Reading, there have been some cases in Massachusetts. Please read the fact sheet from the DPH for preventive measures and signs and symptoms of the illness.
Thank you,
Christine Rose, R.N
First All School Assembly

CURRICULUM GUIDES
New guides for K-5 (Science-ELA Reading, ELA Writing and Math are already up) are up for community feedback. These guides provide an overview. The purpose of these documents is to ensure horizontal and vertical alignment of the MA Curriculum Frameworks within each area of our curriculum. The goal in sharing the guides with the greater Reading community is to provide grounding information about our curriculum practices and an overview of grade-level expectations based on our MA Curriculum Frameworks. We'd love for you to stay informed and check them out!

About these services
Understanding Disabilities
Our mission is to increase positive attitudes toward people with disabilities. We meet the needs of your child’s classroom by offering lessons on various topics that support inclusion and promote respectful interactions. We help children to process and understand the community in which they live, develop a healthy relationship with it, and even make it better. The programs planned for this year include:
- Grade 1 - Food Allergies, Physical Disabilities
- Grade 2 - Low Vision / Hearing Impairments
- Grade 3 - Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Grade 4 - Developmental Disabilities, Learning Disabilities
- Grade 5 - Emotional & Behavioral Disorders
We can’t do this important work without parent volunteers. If you are interested in working in your child’s classroom during the year, please contact Program Coordinator, Allison Sillers, at asillers@understandingdisabilities.org.
Parent guides to learning standards available online
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has published guides to the Massachusetts Learning Standards to help families understand what students are expected to know and be able to do by the end of each grade. These guides are available in English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified Chinese and are designed to build upon the home school connection to support the learning of all students, PreK through Grade 12. Click here to access these guides along with additional activities parents can do to support their children at home.
