NRWHS May 2018 Newsletter
Mission: To prepare each child for a successful future
High Expectations to the Finish
As a school community, we strive to consistently operate under two foundational beliefs:
- Our students’ performance improves when we set and maintain high expectations for them.
- Students who graduate with strong academic records will have more opportunities to achieve long-term success (to achieve their “future stories”).
What constitutes a “strong academic record”? The New York State Education Department has asserted that a student is “college and career ready” if s/he achieves at least an 80 on a mathematics Regents Exam and at least a 75 on the English Regents Exam. We often talk to our students about these goals and how they can achieve them. Students who achieve this designation will be eligible to attend a free trip to SeaBreeze on June 18.
The fourth quarter is “crunch time!” It is important for students to renew their commitment to their studies and work hard to achieve their academic goals. Thank you for serving as a partner in this important effort.

The NRWHS chorus students will be participating in NYSSMA solo festival at Wayne High School on Friday, May 18th and Saturday, May 19th. They have worked hard to prepare songs that will be used for evaluation. 21 students will be participating. Join us in wishing them luck!
INTERIM ASSESSMENT #3 RESULTS
Single Point of Entry Program
As you likely know, we have been reviewing our safety procedures and protocols in order to ensure that we are maintaining a secure facility. That review has led us to institute a single point of entry program at all district schools. Please note the following components of the program that pertain to the high school:
- On weekdays, all entering into and exiting from the building must be done through the main office doors between the hours of 6:30 am and 3 pm. Exception: Fitness Center users and staff may enter or exit through the Fitness Center door until 8:15 am on weekdays.
- At all other times, all entering into and exiting from the building must be done through the Fitness Center door.
In the event of any other exceptions, we will post appropriate signage so that community members know where they can gain access to the building. Thank you for your understanding as we work to make our building more secure.
STUDENTS: REGISTER TO VOTE!
In 11th and 12th grade social studies classes, students learn about the basic beliefs of a variety of political parties. In their senior year, students spend time comparing conservatives and liberals and debating about Republican and Democratic ideals. On Tuesday, May 8th, the Participation in Government classes and the Library will be offering students a chance to register to vote. Any student who will be 18 years old by December 31, 2018 is eligible to register.
PLEASE NOTE: WE WILL BE DISMISSING AT 2:16 PM (5 MINUTES EARLY) ON FRIDAY, MAY 25.

SPRING SPORTS UPDATE -- GO COUGARS!
Girls' JV Softball is off to a 1-1 start. The entire team played great against Palmyra-Macedon on Friday, April 13th, bringing home a win. Mercedes Crum and Lannon Loveless each had a single, Bri Vezzose and Shayla Wilson each hit a double, and Jess Johnson had a triple and a single. Right fielder Dani Bray and first baseman Hannah Mathes connected on several plays, with Dani fielding the ball quickly and throwing to Hannah who made the out. On Friday, April 20th, the girls played Lyons, a very tough team. Although they did not come home with a win, the girls tried hard and walked away with ways to improve. Sophie Roberts scored three runs, stealing home each time. Shayla Wilson made a great catch in left field, and hit a double. The girls have a lot of games left, and are looking forward to working hard to bring home more wins! The team will travel to Midlakes on Saturday, April 28th to play in the Spring Classic tournament. The games are scheduled for 10 am and 12 pm. Their next home game is scheduled for Monday, April 30th at 4:30 pm against Williamson.

THANKS, BAY BRIDGE SPORT SHOP
We would like to thank the Bay Bridge Sport Shop, 9555 Ridge Road in North Rose, for assisting with a recent survey of the animal kingdom in the Finger Lakes Community College Biology Class. Specimens from the Annelid, Crustacean and Chordate groups were observed. Over time, the Bay Bridge Sport Shop has been very supportive of our educational efforts by providing students with access to native aquatic organisms. We thank them for their support!
