Veteran's Day

As we celebrate Veteran's Day, take a look at these resources to help you share this holiday with the students.

Books- Located in the Media Center in a Tub labeled Veteran's Day

1. America's White Table by Margot Theis Raven- This is a wonderful story about a symbol that originated during the time of the Vietnam War that served as a remembrance to service members who were held as prisoners of war or missing in action.

2. Pepper's Purple Heart: A Veteran's Day Story by Heather French Henry- Claire and Robbie learn why we honor veterans on Veterans Day. Claire also learns responsibility after her neighbor rescues her puppy, Pepper.

3. Celebration: The Story of American Holidays by Lucille Recht Penner- This would be great for 3rd or 4th grade and it tells us the meaning behind all holidays. Veteran's Day is included in this book.

4. The Poppy Lady by Moina Belle Michael- When American soldiers entered World War I, Moina Belle Michael, a schoolteacher from Georgia, knew she had to act. Some of the soldiers were her students and friends. Almost single-handedly, Moina worked to establish the red poppy as the symbol to honor and remember soldiers. And she devoted the rest of her life to making sure the symbol would last forever. Thanks to her hard work, that symbol remains strong today. Author Barbara Elizabeth Walsh and artist Layne Johnson worked with experts, primary documents, and Moina's great-nieces to better understand Moina's determination to honor the war veterans.

5. A Wall of Names: The Story of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial by: Judy Donnelly- this would be a chapter book type read aloud about how the memorial came about and how Veteran's Day is a day to remember.

6. Tuesday Takes me There: The Healing Journey of a Veteran and his Service Dog by Luis Carlos Montalvan - This is a picture book with real pictures about a veteran who uses a service dog to help him.
