Shadowlawn Scoop
School Newsletter November 2022
Message from Principal Eliason
We return to school Monday after the Thanksgiving holiday break. I do hope that you and your family were able to enjoy some family time. This fall has been a difficult one for many in the Shadowlawn community, and this holiday season I'm wishing you all peace and joy.
In this newsletter you will find important information about current happenings at Shadowlawn. This week we have a Virtual Learning Day, the final one of the year, on Thursday December 1st. Students will complete lessons on their student laptops using the Canvas learning platform.
We have a very special event coming up on Tuesday, December 6th as we host our second family event of the year - Winter Carnival: Family Math Night! Many of you attended this event last year. We will have a variety of math-themed activities for you to enjoy with your children. There will also be food and fun so please plan to join us!
Our PTO is hosting a fundraising event at Culver's Restaurant on the East Trail on Monday night, November 28th from 5-8. Take a break from cooking and leftovers and join us for a burger and a shake!
In Partnership,

Hurricane Ian Relief Efforts
Shadowlawn is committed to supporting our families as many of you continue to recover from Hurricane Ian. During the month of October we were able to assist many families with supplies and other needs.
We have been working on collecting money donations to purchase twin beds for families who have requested a bed due to flood loss. We received a donation of 12 bed sets which were distributed to families. We also received 67 mattresses which we have at the school. In the next few weeks we will use the money to purchase bed frames. Once we have the beds on campus, we will contact families who requested them to come pick them up.
We have also received donations of gift cards to places like Wal-Mart and Publix. Our school counselor, Mr. C, has been working to distribute those to families in need. If you are in need of assistance as your family continues to recover from Hurricane Ian, please contact Mr. Conceicao by calling the front office.

Communication Corner
Welcome to the Communication Corner. My name is Randi Powell and I am a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). From September through December, I have the privilege of working with an intern from Nova Southeastern University who is studying to become an SLP too! Every month in the Seahawk Scoop newsletter, we will share articles, tips, and ideas to enhance your child’s communication skills – these include:
- Speech sounds - how we say sounds and put sounds together into words. Other words for these problems are articulation or phonological disorders.
- Language - how well we understand what we hear or read and how we use words to tell others what we are thinking.
- Literacy - how well we read and write. People with speech and language disorders may also have trouble reading, spelling, and writing.
- Social Communication - how well we follow rules, like taking turns, how to talk to different people, or how close to stand to someone when talking. This is also called pragmatics.
- Voice - how our voices sound. We may sound hoarse, lose our voices easily, talk too loudly or through our noses, or be unable to make sounds.
- Fluency - also called stuttering, is how well speech flows. Someone who stutters may repeat sounds, like t-t-t-table, use "um" or "uh," or pause a lot when talking. Many young children will go through a time when they stutter, but most outgrow it.
- Cognitive - communication - how well our minds work. Problems may involve memory, attention, problem solving, organization, and other thinking skills.
Around the School
Kindergarten
Kindergarten students were so excited to share their family portraits and poems at curriculum night
First Grade
The first grade students are working hard on Redbird to practice their math facts and math lessons. Students use the interactive manipulatives to help them solve various addition and subtraction facts. They also use whiteboards and paper to show their thinking. They are growing more and more each day! So proud of our first grade Seahawks
Second Grade
Retelling involves students orally reconstructing a story that they have read or has been read to them. Our second-grade students were asked to work collectively in retelling the story “It’s Only Stanley.” Each group worked specifically in the beginning, middle or end of the story. The students used their notes to share between each other and complete the information . The students are working on including characters, settings, and events in the logical sequence of the story.
Fifth Grade
Students in Mrs. Georges’ homeroom working on a class flag during connect for success. This particular group drew flags representing each of their nationalities, which provides such a diverse classroom for students to thrive in.
Teacher of Distinction
Congratulations to PE Teacher, Mr. Baylor, will is the Shadowlawn 22-23 Teacher of Distinction! Mr. Baylor joins a group of exceptional teachers from around the district who are now in the running to receive the Champions for Learning Golden Apple award. We're rooting for you, Mr. Baylor!
Student Leader of the Month
Each month teachers select a Student Leader of the Month from their classrooms to be recognized during our monthly celebration. Students Leaders demonstrate the 7 Habits of Effective People on a regular basis at school. We are so proud of our Student Leaders!
