Hudson Hawk Band Updates
Week of 5/31/2022
22-23 HMS Band Audition Results
We will not discuss audition results with anyone until after our spring concert on May 31. Please take a few days after results are posted to reflect before asking us to discuss them. Thanks in advance for adhering to this request!
A word about audition placements:
There is a place for every student in the HMS band. We take a long time listening to all parts of every audition, weighing extra factors, and trying to decide where each student will be adequately challenged but successful. Undoubtedly, some students will be thrilled with their placement, some will be upset, and many will turn out exactly like they thought they would. There is competition in band and there are only so many spots available for each instrument in each band. Part of our job as band directors is to make each band sound balanced and blended and the only way to do that is to have proper instrumentation in each band. Every band will do the same things, just on a slightly different timeline and with different levels of music.
GISD Clear Bag Policy
Thank you in advance for understanding that this policy is in effect for the safety of all students, staff, and spectators, and while we understand it can be an annoyance, its purpose is especially important at this time.
HMS Bands Spring Concert - TIME CHANGE!!!!!
The Wind Symphony and Honors Band students will wear their contest uniform. The Beginner Band and Symphonic Band will need to dress up for this performance (think wedding guest attire) - boys need a collared shirt with a tie and slacks (no jeans), girls need a dressy blouse and dress pants, skirt and blouse, or a dress (the dress or skirt MUST COVER THE KNEES WHILE SEATED OR LEGGINGS MUST BE WORN UNDERNEATH). There is no color requirement for Symphonic Band and Beginner Band dress.
All students will need to arrive at Sachse HS at 5:30pm to warm-up and get ready for the performances. Doors to the auditorium will open for parents to sit beginning at 6:10pm.

School-Owned Instrument/Uniform Return
Any student who is using a school-owned instrument must bring their instrument to school on Wednesday, June 1. Students with a second instrument at home will turn in those instruments on Wednesday. We will check all of the inventory throughout this week and determine which instruments need to be sent to the repair shop over the summer. ALL SCHOOL-OWNED INSTRUMENTS MUST BE RETURNED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE OODLES OF NOODLES PERFORMANCE ON MONDAY, JUNE 6. Students returning to band at Hudson in the fall will have an instrument to use over the summer - it may not be their current instrument or the one they will use in the fall, but they will have something to use this summer.
All 8th grade students must turn in ALL Hudson instruments by June 6.
Uniforms
All Wind Symphony and Honors Band students must return their school-owned contest uniforms by Friday, June 3. The uniforms need to be cleaned when they are returned. You can have them dry cleaned or they can be washed in COLD water and HUNG to dry.
SHS Cluster Percussion Ensemble and Sachse Jazz Band Concert
Percussion students will walk over to Sachse HS with Mrs. Manaois and Mr. Tucker before school ends on this day. They will be excused from 7/8 period and field tripped out of class. They will need to wear all black head-to-toe. The black attire is EXTREMELY important due to the lighting of their performance piece.

What Should We Be Practicing?
Practicing should happen daily to help build coordination and muscle memory and retain progress. Students should practice sitting in a real chair (preferably one that doesn't roll/spin), using a music stand, with a metronome. Please make sure woodwind players are properly swabbing out their instrument at the end of every practice session to keep their instruments clean!

Please help make sure we can continue repairing instruments as needed by submitting this district fee. These directions to submit an online payment in Skyward should help you with completing that payment. Please let Mrs. Becker know if you have questions.
