Common Sense Media Study 2019
Common Sense Media is a non profit organization dedicated to helping families, teachers and children make sense of all the media around them. I use their teacher resources to develop digital citizenship lessons in the library. They also have many resources for families and students. Recently, they conducted research on media use in Tweens and Teens. If interested in their findings, their report is linked below!
What's Happening in the Library this month???
Kindergarten
Students have been introduced to the 3 major sections of our library - Everybody section (picture books), non-fiction, and our beginning reader chapter books. They are consistently checking out 3 books each week and we will soon bump up to 4. Thanks for helping your student remember to bring their books each week!
1st Grade
Students have been practicing searching the library catalog on the computer using Destiny Quest. They are able to search for topics that interest them and then go find them in the library! We have also done an author study on writer Peter Brown.
2nd Grade
Second graders were very excited to extend their Destiny Quest knowledge this month by logging in to their library accounts. Destiny Quest is the library catalog that we use to search for books. It also has special features that allows students to log in and then put books on hold and recommend books to others. We have been practicing this all month and discussing how we can "be kind" through a computer.
3rd Grade
Students were introduced to the Otter Award. This is an award from the Washington Library Association (WLA) of short chapter books. We will read the 6 nominees together and then send our votes to the WLA near the end of the year. Students also participated in a Destiny Quest scavenger hunt.
4th Grade
Over the summer, I moved the fiction books into genres so that similar books would be together (i.e. fantasy, humor, etc.) Students took a personality quiz to see which genre of books matched their personality and then we learned about each genre category.

Birthday Book Club
Many students ask me about the birthday book club. This is a program run by the PTSA so more information can be found on the website linked below. To participate, parents purchase a book for the month of their student's birthday. Write a message and make sure you include your student's first and last name. Liz Broenneke is the PTSA birthday book club chair and she has a mailbox in the school work room where books can be sent. She will make a plague sticker to put inside the book with your message. Then she gives the books to me and I present to the kiddo at their next library time. It is a great way to celebrate your kiddo's birthday and get new books for the library! Please feel free to email me if you would like some book suggestions. I always have new books that I would like to purchase for the library.
