4th Grade News

Week of January 4th

Welcome Back!

We are so glad to have students back this, and look forward to staying focused and being super successful in the new year!

Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday

School will be closed for staff and students on Monday, January 19th in honor of Martin Luther King Junior Day.

End of Quarter Two // Workdays

We are out of school on Tuesday and Wednesday January 19th-20th for End of Quarter workdays. Keep in mind there are just two weeks between now and the end of the second quarter. This will require extra concentration from students if they wish to bring grades up from progress reports.

Class Dojo Rewards

For students who are part of the 100 or 200 points club, we will be rewarding them this FRDIAY, January 8th. We will allow them to bring their reward in, or participate in their reward. Please remember, these are for students who have earned at least 100 points in the month of December.

Learning Topics

Reading

RI.4.6 Compare and contrast a firsthand and secondhand account of the same event or topic; describe the differences in focus and the information provided.

This week, we will be working to understand how nonfiction texts are written about the same topic, but from two different points of view. A firsthand account of a story is written from that person's point of view. A secondhand account of the same topic would be written from an outside person's point of view. For instance, a biography is written from a secondhand account while an autobiography is written from a firsthand account.

Math

4.NF.1 Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction, by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ

even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.

This week we will be working to review what fractions are and how to find equivalent fractions. For example, 1/2 is equivalent to 8/16. 5/10, and 4/8.
