Assessments

Share your perspective on Lopez’s quote.

I believe that Lopez is saying that assessments have nothing to do with the teacher, but with the child only. It shows what they have learned and how much they have taken in from the lesson that was put forth during their school year.

Describe how your mindset has changed or been validated.

I don't know if I agree wholeheartedly with Lopez's statement. I feel that when you assess the child and the child doesn't do well, it's reflected upon you. As the teacher if the student didn't comprehend what you were teaching then how can they be assessed properly. I don't think that all the blame can be placed on the student, I feel that you have to learn from the assessments of the students and be able to, become a better teacher to get every student on the same page and learn the information that is being taught by the teacher.

Consider the 4 questions Lopez lists under “Defending our Assessment Practices” (p.98). How might you use these questions in your current or anticipated practice?

I feel they are very valid questions. It's truly something to think about and how you can apply them. I believe that assessments are overused and should only be taken when there is a need for the student to be assessed. Such as a student not reaching miles stones for age appropriate level. I think that assessments should be re-evaluated for all students and teachers should take lessons on how to assess their students. I would also like to change up the way we do our assessments and ask why we do them the way we have been. I don't think they are very beneficial the way we do them now.

What value might it add to your practice by keeping these questions in mind?

It would help because it makes you think about what approaches you need to take and what areas should be assessed. Also, it will help you to narrow down what strategies need to be in place to help your classroom flourish.

In what ways have you succeeded/failed to make students your partner in assessment?

I believe that we have failed because when we are giving the assessments we have seven other students in the classroom, and it doesn't help the child who is taking it. So I know the student is being hindered.
