WDMCS Online School for 2021-22
West Des Moines Community Schools | April 20, 2021
The West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) Online Learning Program—WDMCS Online—will provide exceptional online instruction for students in PK-12.
WDMCS Online offers families an alternative to our in-person classroom setting. While where students learn may be different, the quality of instruction and student support remains the same. All courses are taught by licensed WDMCS teachers utilizing the district’s curriculum and the Iowa Academic Standards. Students engage in rigorous coursework and collaborate with their online peers through discussions and projects.
Parents/guardians ONLY need to let us know if they wish to enroll their student for online next school year. Families whose students will learn in-person DO NOT need to do anything at this time.
WDMCS Online Program Overview by Grade
Elementary Overview
Families who wish to enroll their PK-6th grade student into WDMCS Online will commit to full-time enrollment for the entire 2021-22 school year. This is different from the 2020-21 school year when parents were asked to choose online or in-person for each semester.
Elementary Students Assigned to a Specific School
If you choose to enroll in WDMCS Online, students will be assigned to an elementary school that houses the online teachers for their grades/sections. Students will receive communication from that school, learn about social activities, and connect with a parent organization.
Junior High Overview
Families who wish to enroll their 7th and/or 8th grade student into WDMCS Online will commit to full-time enrollment for the entire 2021-22 school year. This is different from the 2020-21 school year when parents were asked to choose online or in-person for each semester.
WDMCS Online students who are able to come to on-site facilities may take part in sports, clubs, and co-curricular activities like debate, mock trial, the school newspaper, student leadership, and more. Students are also eligible to participate in band, chorus, drama, orchestra, and school plays. Eighth grade students who choose to participate in athletics are also eligible.
High School Overview
High school students who choose WDMCS Online will receive a quality, comprehensive WDMCS education. Core classes, Advanced Placement (AP) classes, and college-level courses are all available options for the high school online learner.
One unique aspect of WDMCS Online for secondary students is the option to learn fully online or take some classes online and some in-person. Students must take at least THREE online classes to be enrolled in the WDMCS Online program.
