Glennwood Elementary ~ Where Learning Takes Flight

Holly Brookins, PhD, Principal ~ Summer Clayton, Assistant Principal ~ Jill Tolsma, Instructional Coach

Hello Glennwood Families,

Tomorrow is our final outdoor Community Circle at 8:30 am before we shift back to hosting it in the auditorium. It is going to be chilly! Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather. We will make CC as quick but as much fun as we can!

I hope you are planning to join us for our 2nd Annual PTA Chili Cook-Off this Sunday. Our amazing PTA has planned lots of fun events for families and the fall book fair also kicks off. This is a great fundraising event to support our PTA and our school. Please see more details below in the PTA section. Who will win for the best chili this year?

Warmest regards,

Holly Brookins, Ph.D.

Principal

As cooler weather is setting in, we are seeing an increase in illness at school. Here are some tips to keep your student and family safe as well as minimize exposures at school.

We are already seeing some flu cases in the district. The best defense against flu and covid is to get vaccinated. Read here for a quick reference to see the difference between the flu and a cold FLU symptoms

COVID-19 Information: Please notify us if your child tests positive for COVID-19. An email to ebarrington@csdecatur.net is the quickest way to reach me and I will respond with isolation dates and what is needed to return. In general, students will isolate for five full days after the first day of symptoms, and can return to school on day 6, provided their symptoms are improving and they wear a mask at school for a full ten days after symptoms began. A negative COVID-19 test is not required for return to school, but students must be fever-free with symptoms improving. At this time, we are NOT offering concurrent learning for student absences due to COVID-19. For information on CSD’s current COVID-19 mitigations, please click here.

For any health-related questions or concerns, please contact Nurse Beth at 404-370-4435 or ebarrington@csdecatur.net.

Glennwood Staff Appreciation

This year, to show our appreciation for our amazing staff, the Glennwood PTA will be sponsoring a staff snack table in addition to hosting other staff appreciation events later in the year. We are asking each grade level to "stock the table" for a given month; each grade will be asked to sponsor a staff appreciation event twice this year. We kindly ask that each family participate in one of the two opportunities for your grade level (the intention is that a family only needs to participate once).

For October, we're asking second grade families to host a "Spooky Treat and Snack Table" for our staff on Thursday, October 27th. If you're a second grade family, please visit the Sign Up Genius here to sign up to bring in something for our staff.

Please drop off your items with Ms. Reynolds at the front office October 24-26th anytime during school hours and the PTA will assemble the snack table for our staff to enjoy on October 27th.

The PTA is also requesting clean-up volunteers, so please sign up via the Sign Up Genius if you can volunteer your time to help clean up. If you are unable to purchase items for the table, but would like to donate funds towards the event, the PTA is also collecting monetary donations. Please Paypal your donation to the PTA at: Treasurer@Glennwoodpta.org with a note that it is for the October Snack Table and we'll take care of it for you.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Staff Appreciation Co-Chairs: Haley Stevens (haleycstevens@gmail.com) or Samantha Bryan (samantha.chopp@gmail.com).

Birthdays Celebrations in Community Circle

Going forward, we will announce all birthdays for the month on the first Community Circle of each month. In Community Circle on November 4, we will announce all November birthdays. This will hopefully make it easier for staff announcing the birthdays and also for parents so that they will know when their child's birthday will be announced.

Parent Volunteers Needed for the AAPI/NHPA/APIDA Sidekick Program

Is your child part of the AAPI/NHPA/APIDA community? Consider becoming part of the AAPI/NHPA/APIDA Sidekick program!

To foster a sense of support and connection within the CSD AAPI/NHPA/APIDA community, AAPI/NHPA/APIDA high school student mentors will be grouped into pairs and matched up with AAPI/NHPA/APIDA elementary students.

There will be 6 in-person sessions occurring monthly on Fridays between 11:30 and 12:30 starting November 4th and going through April. Meetings will be held at the Glenwood ES campus.

This program is free and open to all identifying AAPI/NHPA/APIDA students at Glenwood ES. The program is an initiative supported by CSD's Department of Equity and Student Services and Decatur HS's Asian Culture Club.

If you are interested in volunteering to help with this club, please complete this Google Form.

Run With the Dogs (RWTD) 2023 Registration is Now Open!

Join us on Saturday, January 28, 2023 for Run With the Dogs, a Decatur tradition now in its 19th year.

We’ll be back at Beacon Hill Middle School for the 5K and Pup Trot, and we are pleased to announce that this year’s race is an official qualifying event for the Peachtree Road Race!

If you think you have the perfect dog to be featured on this year’s t-shirt, please enter the Face of the Race contest. Just post a photo of your dog, plus a blurb about why your dog should be selected as the Face of the Race, to www.facebook.com/RWTD5k or on Instagram with the hashtag #RWTD5K.

All contest entrants must register for the race for their dogs to be considered. Photos can be submitted until November 7. Four finalists will be selected by the volunteer race committee, and voting on these four finalists will begin November 11. The Face of the Race winner will be announced November 18.

Run With the Dogs 5K is an annual fundraiser of the Decatur Bulldog Boosters and supports the athletic programs at Decatur High School and Beacon Hill Middle School. All race participants will receive the coveted long-sleeved T-shirt designed by local artist Adam Pinsley.

Click here to register. For more information, visit rwtd5K.com.

CSD Nutrition

Nutrition Department will start sending negative meal balance communication to Parents and Staff on Friday, October 21, 2022. These efforts to send the low-balance communications will continue weekly through the automated infinite campus messenger. Some accounts may have had outstanding balances prior to being approved for free or reduced meal benefits. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Nekee Mathis at nmathis@csdecatur.net. or (470) 237- 0368 ext 7607.

Note: A free and reduced lunch application can be completed anytime during the school year. Currently, the district policy allows students to receive meals, not extra items, for example, i.e. bag of chips. However, a child's negative meal balance will continue to incur debt as they receive meals.

CSD ESS Department

Ms. Nicole Brickhouse, Family Support Manager for InCommunity, will share information about Family Support Funding and an overview about InCommunity Organization. The City Schools of Decatur's Special Education Department is excited to welcome this wonderful well-established organization to our district.

Who is eligible to access funding?
Individuals ages four and up with a diagnosed developmental disability living in Georgia at home with their families, and are not currently receiving a NOW/COMP Waiver, are eligible for Family Support Services. *Funding is disability-based, not financial needs based.

Target Audience: Parents of students with an IEP Pre-K through 12th Grades

Date: Oct 20, 2022

Time: 6-7 pm
