Terra Linda Tiger Tale
October 1, 2020
Principal's Message
Dear Terra Linda Families,
I hope you were able to read the message sent out yesterday from our School District. If you missed it, here is the link again: https://www.smore.com/42k1a-social-political-expression?ref=email
In the coming weeks, our Terra Linda students will be introduced to the concepts of identity, diversity, race and racism using age-appropriate curriculum, and we will be sure to create safe spaces for students to make sense of these topics and the world around them. We look forward to engaging in this important work with our students. We are committed to providing an environment in all our classrooms for students to learn from diverse perspectives and take action to promote equity both inside and outside of our school. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me by calling Terra Linda or sending me an email at christina_batsell@beaverton.k12.or.us
Tips to Support At-Home Learning
Comprehensive Distance Learning has created a unique opportunity for parents/guardians to listen in to the lessons or supports that teachers are providing to their child(ren). As you listen in, there will be times when students come across tasks that are difficult, questions they cannot answer, or assignments they don't know how to start. We are actively teaching students how to persevere, what to do when they don't know where to start, how to have a Growth Mindset where we learn from our mistakes. Our goal is not to put students into situations that are way beyond their ability level, but we do want to create opportunities for Productive Struggle where they have opportunities to use some of the skills we are teaching them.
What does this all mean for parents/guardians at home?
Please do your best to allow students to answer questions incorrectly or take time to think about a problem and how they might approach it before you step in. If your child is working on something independently, you might try asking some of these questions:
- What do you need to do?
- What resources could you look at for help?
- What have you tried already?
- What could you try first?
If the teacher is working with your child in a small group or one-on-one, please just listen in or give them a lot of space to work with the teacher. If you suggest answers or try to help your child, you may accidentally take away a learning opportunity from them. In these small group or individual sessions, teachers are there to assist and coach your child. Thank you for stepping away and allowing your child to take full advantage of this focused learning opportunity.
Thank you for being our continued partners during this unique time.
With appreciation,
Christy

Engagement in CDL
Thank you for all you are doing during Distance Learning. Thank you for helping your child(ren) follow their daily schedule and for reminding them to participate in their class meetings, lessons, activities, and assignments each day.
Students will get the most value out of each day if they are able to join their class, small group, or individual session whenever it is scheduled. If your child needs to occasionally miss something, please be sure to find the video link of that lesson or activity that is posted in Seesaw (K-3) or Canvas (4-5) at the end of each day. Students can still participate in whatever they missed by viewing these videos and completing the related activities. Our hope is that this happens very infrequently. Regular participation during live sessions is the best way to help students learn.
If you will be absent for a full day, It is most helpful if you contact the Attendance Line at 503-356-2491 to report the absence. You can also let teachers know by email, Seesaw, or Canvas. Teachers will not be sending you a summary of what you will be missing. Instead, our expectation is that students view the videos of what they missed and complete all posted activities and assignments so they are ready to participate when they return.
Wednesday, October 7 Schedule Reminder
Please note that the District will follow a different student schedule next week. Students will have a regular synchronous learning day on Wednesday, October 7, as opposed to an independent asynchronous learning day. There are no scheduled classes on Friday, October 9.
For your planning purposes, the following Wednesdays also will be traditional synchronous learning days: January 20, February 17 and June 2.

Tips for Grab & Go Days: Every Tuesday & Thursday from 11:00-12:00
What is Available? Grab & Go Days are every Tuesday and Thursday at Terra Linda from 11:00-12:00. If items are available for an entire grade level, your child's teacher will let you know what day to come to pick them up. You can also watch News & Notes for details of upcoming Grab & Go Days. Be sure to look at the Upcoming Events calendar above to see what items are available each day.
What to do if you cannot attend a Grab & Go day for your child? Just call our office at 503-356-2490 and make arrangements to pick up items anytime after the scheduled day and time. We are not able to have items prepared early. The only thing we cannot distribute at other times is breakfast & lunch.
What if we have children who have a Grab & Go event on both Tuesday and Thursday? You can come to Terra Linda on both Tuesday and Thursday, or you can wait until Thursday to pick up everything for your family. Unfortunately we won't have Thursday's items ready on Tuesday.
Library Books: Anyone who has placed a hold on a Terra Linda library book by Monday each week can pick up the book(s) on Thursday each week.
Free Meals: All families are invited to pick up free meals for all children in their family during the Grab & Go times. On Tuesday, each child receives two breakfasts & two lunches. On Thursday, each child receives three of each meal. Children do not be present to pick up meals.
Masks Required: Please wear a mask to participate in Grab & Go.
Drive or Walk: You are welcome to arrive in a vehicle or walk up to our meal or supply distribution lines. We have a staff member stationed in our cross walk connecting the Terra Linda Neighborhood and our school.
