Newsletter Week 3 Term 3

Sacred Heart School Christchurch 13 August 2021

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Interesting start to the week with a bit of snow and freezing temperatures but delighted to see the sun come out the following day. It has been a big week of swimming. The children have shown great effort and improvement from day 1. The instructors are enjoying working with our children and we look to enjoy another full week of it next week.

Last Friday night I was immensely proud of our choir who performed with 600 other children at the Christchurch Town Hall for Jubilate. It was a huge celebration of sacred music enjoyed by the diocese community. The children spent the whole day there rehearsing and also celebrated a Mass with all attendees. Thank you to Kayte Jory for the time put into this choir and the support you gave them on the night.

Liturgical Year

This coming Sunday is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Aotearoa’s National Patronal Feast Day. It is a holy day of obligation when the Church celebrates Mary being taken to Heaven, body and soul to share in the Resurrection of her Son and anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians.

Read this reflection on the Assumption by Father John O’Connor on Food for Faith.

The Mass

In the Nicene Creed we say “I believe in one Lord Jesus Chrsit, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. Consubstantial describes the relationship between Jesus and the Father. (New Words, Deeper Meaning, NZCBC 2010)

Big picture

A special welcome to Alwin who has joined Teretere this term!

Swimming

Swimming will be held over two weeks from the 9th till the 20th August (week 3 and 4). Please ensure all students have swimming togs ready for this.

Religious Education

Last Friday the children from Muriwai/Room 6 presented a prayer service about families. The children have been learning about their own families, extended families and God’s family.

Sport

It has been great to see students enjoying some indoor fitness on these cold mornings, keeping active before the day begins. Basketball got underway again this week. Our year 7 and 8 Celtics team had a convincing win while the Pacers lost but played with a lot of heart. Our Year 5 and 6 team started well on Wednesday but were unable to hold on for the win. It has been pleasing to see so many students enjoying our swimsafe lessons this week. They will continue again next week.

TEACHER ONLY DAY - Please be aware that we have scheduled a Teacher Only Day for Monday 30th August

Internet Safety

The Harmful Digital Communications Act (HDCA) was passed in 2015 to help people dealing with serious or repeated harmful digital communications. It lays out 10 communication principles that guide how to communicate online.

A Bee Hive Is Coming

A BEE HIVE IS COMING to 70 Spencer Street: in August there will be a bee hive arriving that will be placed at the edge of the lawn behind the presbytery. If your child is allergic to bee stings it would be wise to advise them of the arrival of a hive. For those parents who park their cars behind the presbytery, I would suggest you keep to the paths and shingle and do not walk across the grass at the south side of Sacred Heart church behind the presbytery. The foundation for the hive is in place so if you want to see where the hive is going to be located now would be the time to have a look and show your child/ren. Parents will be informed when the hive is in place sometime in early August. There will be signs placed near the hive to warn people they are near the hive. Thank you - Fr Peter.
