WHY ATTENTION TO DETAIL MATTERS
Why is it important to pay attention to detail? Attention to detail is a skill that all craftsmen need to be the best at their profession. Craftsmen spend countless hours fine-tuning the rough edges that are oblivious to others. Each craftsman knows that each masterpiece requires meticulously layered details. Frederic Auguste Bartholdi created the Statue of Liberty in 1870. The statue is three hundred and five feet. In 1870, the Wright Brothers were twenty years away from the first flight, but yet Bartholdi spent years fine-tuning every lock of hair on Lady Liberty. Bartholdi felt compelled as a master craftsman to sculpt every inch of his creation using the same level of technique and skill. Today, due to the invention of flight, we can admire Bartholdi’s exquisite work and attention to detail that once was out of sight.
As craftsmen in our classroom, are you that dedicated to excellence? Are you committed to meaningful bell-to-bell instruction when no one is looking? Are you building relationships? What “minor” details of your job do you let slide? To create a masterpiece in our students’ lives we have to commit to excellence. To be the best at our craft, we have pay attention to the struggling learner, understand that relationship is key, and create an environment that fosters critical thinking.
At Roberts, I want you to cultivate a growth mindset. Excellence is not born. It is what we repeatedly do day-in and day-out that creates our habits. We have to ensure that we are respectful to each other, constantly cultivate a positive work environment, and have no tolerance for gossip. Thank you for being the best family and having the will to be the best teachers!

Mrs. Gourley has reached out to teachers, staff and students on how to work with her ABLE students.Mrs. Gourley volunteered to take a student who was struggling academically, socially and behaviorally into her classroom. This student has flourished under her direction and is now happy and eager to come to school daily. Mrs. Gourley has also arranged for CTHS faculty and students to visit Roberts to work and read with her ABLE students. She has set up multiple field trips for her students to continue to develop social and life skills that are needed as they continue to transition into the Real World. Mrs.Gourley is a wonderful teacher who is full of life.

FOCUSED WALKTHROUGHS: SMALL GROUP INSTRUCTION
- It starts with us, the teacher led group in the blended model. We need to make sure that we are increasing the rigor of instruction in our small group.
What does increasing rigor look like.
- This means providing our students more of a challenging and meaningful learning environment. We want to create a small group environment where students are thinking critically and actively employing problem solving skills. We need to allow our students the opportunity to struggle in their learning.
How do you support this necessary struggle to take your student further than ever?
- This can only happen if we preplan our questions. At times, we let our students off the hook by supplying the answer too quickly. One of the tools we can implement within our small groups is to check for understanding. Understanding is best gauged through a written answer. Written responses give teachers an objective framework for understanding when to move on and when to reteach.
What will we be looking for:
- Give students the opportunity to struggle
- Preplan questions and sentence stems
- Check for understanding through writing
