Congratulations, Drew!
WHY I BELONG TO ATA
This week's spotlight is on David Byer, an Instructional Coach at Baldwin Elementary. David was asked, "Why do you belong to ATA?" See his response below.
If you'd like to share your experiences regarding the benefits of ATA membership, please contact me.
WHAT DOES ATA DO FOR ITS MEMBERS?
- Negotiate salary, fringe benefits, and working conditions. (Neighboring districts would love to have our benefits plan.)
- Provide a space for our meetings that we own, which generates rental income (we rent to Alhambra Fire Dept.).
- Maintain the contract through the grievance process. We defend individual and group rights.
- Keep important educational news coming the members' way: current legislation and action needed to realize or defeat it.
- Pay salaries for a full-time release President (negotiated in 1990), shared Executive Director, and a part-time secretary who answer our phone calls, come to our assistance when asked, produce communication, meet with the site and District administration on behalf of individuals and the entire association, organize the activities and materials for the Board of Directors and numerous committees, and respond to the direction from our elected representatives.
- We support each other in ways that matter to us. We direct our site reps to take action on what we want the ATA to do (or not do). All requests come to the Representative Council, which makes the policy that the Board of Directors implements.
We're able to accomplish these things because of our COLLECTIVE POWER. ATA's strength is directly related to its numbers; each person is like a brick in our wall. When we are UNITED, we are a force to be reckoned with.

COMMUNITY SCHOOLS: 5 STEPS TO SUCCESS
CTA and NEA have been at the forefront of efforts to build community schools, providing resources and guidance to educators and local associations. And now, CTA leaders and staff have developed a five-step path to help locals build member and community support.
Read about CTA and local chapters' work on this path in the Feb./March Educator magazine. Find more information about community schools and ways to get your school/district involved at cta.org/communityschools.
IFT GRANT APPLICATION DEADLINE APPROACHING
Members who are awarded a grant receive 100% of the funds (unlike many other grant programs where the funds are sent to the grant recipient's school district who takes a portion of the funds for administrative costs).
Visit our website at cta.org/IFT to access our IFT Grant Program Guide, get information about an upcoming IFT grant training, or to book an appointment during our office hours on Tuesdays 2:00-5:00 pm.
Download the IFT grant program training opportunities flyer and the 2022-2023 grant application flyer.
