COVID-19 Updated Information
Martinez Unified School District - March 31, 2020
Dear MUSD Staff and Community,
As many of you are probably hearing or reading on different media platforms, the State Superintendent of Schools, Tony Thurmond, released a letter this afternoon regarding his opinion that schools may not reopen this year. Please note, at this time, this is not a directive from the state level.
Here is the language from Tony Thurmond's letter regarding schools potentially not being in session the rest of the year, "Due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year. This is in no way to suggest that school is over for the year, but rather we should put all efforts into strengthening our delivery of education through distance learning." - Tony Thurmond, State Superintendent of Schools
What does this mean for MUSD? For now, it means our efforts were already focused on the right target, planning for a longer duration of distance learning through May 1st. While Mr. Thurmond's letter may preview his thinking and the many challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic, there have not been any decisions from the state level, the county level, or from MUSD regarding school closures beyond May 1st. Although Mr. Thurmond's letter highlights the possibility of extending school closures, it is not yet a reality and no formal declarations have been made by the state, at this time.
As we have seen with other recent developments, things are always subject to change. Should there be any official declaration from the state level, county level, or local level, to extend our current closure, I promise to inform our community and staff in a timely and transparent manner. As always, please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
CJ Cammack
Superintendent
