Description: Calcium
- Mineral: A naturally occuring inorganic solid.
Helps the body regulate blood clotting, nerve activity; and is needed for muscle contraction, including the heart. Calcium helps teeth and gums stay strong, as well as keeps your bones strong.
Effects
Not enough: can cause osteoporosis; when bones become porous, making them weak and fragile
Too much: you have a small risk of developing kidney stones; can calsify coronary arteries in suseptable individuals.
Interesting Facts
- Calcium comes from the Latin word "Calx" meaning lime
- Calcium compounds are mostly found in sedimentary rocks such as limestone, chalk and marble
- Calcium is not naturally found in its elemental state.
- Minerals make up about 4 to 5 % of your body weight, which most become a paert of your teeth and bones
