MESSAGE FROM DR. BEARDEN
Hello SHE Families,
I hope that you are all well. I am sure that in addition to looking forward to your weekend, many of you are looking forward to Monday, September 21st, the “official” start of getting students back to a traditional school environment!
Even typing that last sentence gave me chill bumps… the good kind!! Getting our students safely back to SHE classrooms has been our focus for so many months, with the preparation for Monday being purposeful and ongoing. For your information and consideration, we have created a presentation, which outlines all of our safety protocols and practices regarding arrival/dismissal, social distancing, classroom cleaning, and necessary student transitions. Phase 3 Parent Information
While I did not necessarily enjoy the surgery or the time off which was necessary for recovery, this event did remind me of the importance of support and encouragement of my work family and school community! I am so thankful for Ms. Santos, our administrative leadership team, and our amazing teachers, who carried on and covered many of my responsibilities during the past two weeks!
I also want to thank PTO volunteers for the wonderful breakfast on Wednesday! I was not able to be there to enjoy it, but I heard such wonderful comments of appreciation from our staff! If you are not a member, please consider joining our PTO and also consider volunteering!! We need everyone working together to ensure that SHE SHINES!
In closing, I still have many weeks of healing ahead before I am fully recovered but I WILL BE BACK at SHE on September 21st, albeit in a sling, contributing to this MOST IMPORTANT WORK! I will be sure to wave at carpool 😊
This quote remains as our focus this week:
Children are not a distraction from more important work.
They are the MOST important work!
C.S. Lewis
On behalf of teachers and staff, thank you for the support and encouragement this week! Our teachers are working hard each day for your students, please consider taking some time to send a thank you email and/or card!
Please feel free to share the Hilltop Happenings with anyone, who may be interested.
Thank you for your trust and your partnership! As always, please reach out if you have any questions or anything to share. Take care, Lorrie

SEPTEMBER: ATTENDANCE AWARENESS
September is Attendance Awareness Month
The School Social Work Department is raising awareness with schools, parents and the community about the importance of on-time and daily student attendance by promoting positive attendance strategies in the month of September and beyond.
Did you know?
· Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
· Missing 10% (about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read.
· Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.
· Tardy arrival to school may lead to poor attendance.
· Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
Here are some tips and helpful reminders to build the habit of good attendance:
1. Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
2. Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before ( or virtually, back sure their work station is set up and ready to go).
3. Encourage your child to ride the bus (when feasible and comfortable to do so). Riding the bus is effective to avoid tardiness and late arrivals.
4. Don’t let your child stay home unless he/she is truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
* School COVID guidelines should be followed
5. If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, the school counselor, or the school social worker for recommendations on how to make he/she feel comfortable and excited about learning.
6. Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
For more on school readiness, visit www.attendanceworks.org and www.reachoutandread.org or email me at downeyr@fultonschools.org.
Let’s be on time, present, and ready to learn – virtually AND in person!
