The Final Push...
But let's talk about that for a moment. For the past five years we have finished in a spot in regionals where we feel like we should make state finals. But we don't...what's the deal? Well the short answer is this activity is subjective. Ultimately we are judged in that single moment compared to others, not in combination with past success in the season (like Winter Guard, Drumline, Winds, etc). Still, how can a group finish, let's say(i'm making numbers up) ....3rd, but finish...14th at semi state? Did the band really do THAT poorly compared to two weeks ago? Did everyone else get THAT MUCH better? The answer is again, no. It's subjective.
What we have to focus on is the one thing we can: Ourselves. We have to know that the work we have done in previous rehearsals only gets us to that one moment, so the work we NOW DO moving forward is what will define what opportunity we have at Semi-State. It is INCREDIBLY tough to want to do more than you ever have (sectionals before rehearsal, during academic lab, with tuners, missing family events, not having a social life for two weeks), when you haven't seen that payoff at the end of the season. But what we do have going for us is this: Nothing before today matters anymore. ESPECIALLY THE RESULTS OF PREVIOUS SEASONS.
To reach a mountain top seems impossible, until you finally realize what it took (notice past tense...we can't know what it takes until we've reached the top). Our kids know nothing other than Semi-State...however it was not always that way. It was the band of 2012 that reached that mountain top and set the standard on what it takes...and it was seemingly impossible for that group...until it happened.
Before that...in 2011, the mountain top was a Gold at regionals. And now we have 8 in a row. But again, from experience, those kids thought a Gold was not achievable...until it happened.
So here we are once more. In a top position with just two weeks remaining until the big dance. It seems impossible to work harder. It seems impossible to give more of your energy. It seems impossible to get things any cleaner. And even if we do...it still seems impossible to think all of that will get us to State Finals....until it happens. students before you never gave up hope, they found ways to keep getting better, and they laid their heart on the line to get to the top of the mountain; And so will you. Because at some point it will happen. And the memories only last forever when the proper preparation is put in.
Don't get lucky....be undeniable.
Invitational Prep
We will have a quick meeting about our invitational on Friday to go over those final details as well as start the set up process. I'll have more information on this tonight at practice after our final Invitational Chair meeting.
