Tadamichi Kuribayashi was a General for the Imperial Japanese Army, he was also the overall commander of the Japanese garrison during the battle.
Holland Smith was a commanding General of headed Task Force 56 during Iwo Jima. He was sometimes called the father of modern U.S amphibious warfare.
What strategies and weapons were used?
A popular weapon used in the pacific was the flame thrower. It was used to kill Japanese that were hidden in caves, building and pill boxes. Also grenades were thrown into these hiding places since the Japanese would not come out.
The Japanese had miles of tunnels underground where they hid and attacked the Americans from.

Outcome...
In the end.. after many men were wounded and after many men lost their lives to protect their country.. the U.S came out victorious. The battle of Iwo Jima was a hard fought battle that will always be remembered as one of the most difficult in the Pacific.
