High School Highlights
Weekly Updates from Big Walnut High School
Week of October 24
Another week in the books! There was a lot of excitment in the building on Friday with our club picture day, senior panoramic and drone photos and a visit from the BGSU Men's Chorus for our music students in grades 7-12. Our students are making a solid start to second quarter!
Please be sure to scan our family newsletter each week to stay in-the-know on everything happening at the high school. The second quarter often feels the busiest with events and celebrations both in school and in our lives outside of school. We don't want you to miss anything!
As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers, school counselor or the administration if you have any questions or concerns. Feel free to contact the main office at 740-965-3766 between the hours of 7:00 and 3:15.

CCP-Spring 2023
Students planning to take College Credit Plus Courses through Columbus State Community College online or on a campus for Spring 2023 should submit completed registration documents to Dr. Jordan in the school counseling office as soon as possible. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Jordan for assistance, please scan the QR code located throughout the building.
Fall Senior Newsletter Now Available
Attention Senior Families: Our fall newsletter has been shared with all our senior families through email. It is also posted to our high school website as well as to the Class of 2023 page on Schoology. If you have not had a chance to read it, please do so at your earliest convenience as it contains a lot of important information for our seniors! Any questions should be directed to Christina McDonough, senior class advisor. Thank you!
Pre-ACT Given in December
The pre-ACT (practice ACT) is scheduled for December. The test will be $17 and registration for it will open at the end of October. This is an excellent opportunity for all students to prepare for the ACT which is given to all students in the spring of junior year for FREE (one-time only). Students who achieve college ready scores on the ACT earn a college ready seal. As a reminder, all students need 2 of 12 available seals to graduate. Additional details regarding graduation requirements are located here.
Current CCP Students
The last day to drop an Autumn 2022 CCP class offered through CSCC is November 1. You will receive a "W" for dropping the class but it will not affect your high school or college GPA. Please remember: although dropping a class at this point will not affect your GPA, it will require that you repay the district for the cost of the class. Please see Dr. Jordan for additional information.
FFA Students Place First in the State
Last week, students in our Food Science classes took the Ohio FFA Online Food Science & Technology Career Development Event exam. More than 1300 students from 128 schools took the exam. For the sixth year in a row, our students placed first in the state in this event as a team. The score will follow all students through various levels of competition where they can compete for scholarships and other awards. This is especially exciting considering that Ohio FFA rules do not allow students to participate in an event they have previously won, so each of the past six years, we have had different students receive this honor rather than the same group on repeat.
Our top-placing individuals were:
Sophomore Paris Anderson and Senior Maddy Jones - tied for 1st in the state
Junior Jordyn Lokey (3rd)
Sophomore Gracie Young (4th)
Sophomore Aidan Chadwick (11th)
All these students will participate in the hands-on components of the sub-district Food Science & Technology CDE the second week in November.
Congrats to these students and our entire FFA program. We wish them the best of luck at the next level!

BWHS Academic Boosters
Academic Boosters - who are we? We are a group of organized parents who provide support to help improve the academic experience for all students, parents, and staff at BWHS. We provide An Evening of Excellence in September to recognize sophomores, juniors, and seniors who earned a 3.5 GPA the previous year. We sponsor the annual Academic and Military Signing in the spring for graduating seniors who have been offered college scholarships and graduating seniors who have enlisted in Military Services. Students who earn a 5 on their AP exam receive a High Five yard sign provided by and delivered to their home by members of the Academic Boosters. Our staff at BWHS is crucial to the success of our students and the academic booster parents show them just how much we appreciate them by providing a few very small tokens of appreciation during staff appreciation week in April. We have many other ideas of ways we can expand and continue to support the academic efforts of our students and staff! We are looking forward to a productive and fun year!
Meetings are typically at 6:30pm on the second Monday of each month. (No December meeting.) This year, our meetings are as follows: 11/14, 1/9, 2/6, 3/13, 4/3, and 5/8.
