A Message from Ms. Ellison
Dear Glen Grove Families,
Wow! What fun we had celebrating our school community and wearing our spirit wear t-shirts yesterday. THANK YOU to the PTA for providing a t-shirt for every single student at Glen Grove School. We look forward to seeing our Gators wear their spiritwear on each Friday!
On October 21st, we have a very special event planned by our Glen Grove Community Project. Our Gators and families are all invited to join us in learning about and creating an ofrenda. This promises to be a fun night where we celebrate and learn about Hispanic culture and ways of honoring our loved ones. We will have supplies for you to build your own ofrenda in a shoebox. If you bring a picture of a loved one, you can add it to your ofrenda. It is helpful to know who is attending, so if you are able please fill out this RSVP form.
I hope that everyone had a productive parent/teacher conference. The home/school partnership is critical to student success. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about your child’s school experience.
In partnership,
Kate Ellison
Glen Grove Principal

Hello Glen Grove Families,
Our school community is invited to participate in an evening of cultural activities as we learn about and celebrate the Latinx tradition of Day of the Dead. This tradition is a festive way to honor the memory of deceased loved ones.
On Friday 10/21 from 6:00-7:30 we will enjoy traditional arts and crafts and assemble a shared community ofrenda (altar).
Additionally, if you and your student would like to create your own small ofrenda (altar) to honor a loved one (and to take home), you may create one that evening. We will make these ofrendas in a shoebox. We will have supplies for you. All that you will need to bring is a photo (4 x 6 inches or smaller) of your loved one.
We look forward to sharing this special evening of culture and crafts with you and your family!
Kindly,
The Glen Grove Community Project

Gracias,
El Proyecto Comunitario de Glen Grove
El comité de familias bilingües (BPAC)

Lost Library Books
This year the district is changing how families pay for lost and damaged books. Parents will pay online through Powerschool instead of writing a check to the individual school. The district will assess fees in January and June. Parents will be notified about lost or damaged books the month before the fee is placed in Powerschool. Books that are paid for and found can be returned to the school. The district will refund the money if found in the same school year.

SCIENCE CORNER
Hello Gator Community! Mrs. Burns here with a quick science update for you all.
- Why do objects move? What causes objects to stop moving? What kinds of forces can act upon an object? These are all questions that 3rd grade has spent time on exploring in science lately. Lots of great hands on discovery happening in each classroom from flying balloons, to flicking index cards, to Slinkies, and more. Now we learn how to predict the future using science! It isn't magic...it's learning how to recognize and use patterns to make sense of what we're observing in our activities.
- 4th grade is wrapping up their 1st unit of science by putting on their engineering hats and getting creative with solving a real-life problem: erosion along Chicago's lakefront. From shrinking beaches to a damaged lakefront recreation path to the gradual breakdown of Lake Shore Drive, the students are able to choose their own focus for this final assignment. They are comparing various examples of how people currently try to prevent erosion in other waterfront locations, creating their own proposal for how they think Chicago could solve this problem locally. I have seen some very creative ideas so far that the Chicago city planners may want to consider!
- 5th grade also is wrapping up their 1st unit of science, moving on soon from chemistry to social studies. They have done ALOT of hands on chemistry labs in this unit, as well as their fair share of writing. We've recently finished exploring how to recognize a chemical change when mixing substances, as well as diving in to the concept that matter is neither created nor destroyed. The Law of Conservation of Mass is a big idea, but through a few teacher demonstrations and small group lab activities I believe these budding scientists have a good handle on it. More fun to come in Unit 2!
