The History of Babe Ruth
The legend of the Babe Ruth started on February 6, 1895.Babe Ruth made the game of baseball very popular.Babe Ruth is best know for hitting home runs and striking out a lot of people a game. Babe Ruth's nickname is Bambino and The Sultan of Swat. He played in America Baseball League. He was a Major League Baseball pitcher and outfielder. He played for 22 seasons on three teams, from 1914 through 1935. The legend of Babe Ruth ended on August 16, 1948.
Interesting Facts
1.Ruth lived for a time on the site of what is now Oriole Park at Camden Yards, above one of his father’s string of saloons.
2.His real name was George Herman Ruth, as was his father’s. He is the only player with that last name in major league history.
3.Ruth was still living at St. Mary’s when he signed with the Baltimore Orioles of the International League in Feb. 1914. He would be in the major leagues less than five months later.
4.He hit his first professional home run on March 7, 1914, in Fayetteville, N.C., during an intrasquad game in which he played shortstop.
5.Ruth made his major league debut at Fenway Park on July 11, 1914 as a starting pitcher. He pitched seven innings for the win but was 0-for-2 for at the plate, striking out against Cleveland lefty Willie Mitchell in his first major league at-bat.
